I do not understand why anyone would question the oil viscosity.
No one in this forum is more familiar with this engine than Toyota engineers. No amount of googling or "gut feeling" would supercede the minimum 4 years of university education and countless years of experience each of their engineers have, plus they designed the damn thing. And doesn't mater what over seas engines are running. There very well could be very minor adjustments to the internals unique to each market that make the specified oil required

This is one of the funniest threads I have seen here lately. Why people think they are smarter than the engineers that designed the engine is beyond me.
Here are some of my favorite arguments from this thread:
    1. "The "Same" engine is used in a different country and their manual says to use xxxx oil"
    - all government regulations and region specific material availiblities aside, even though it might be the "same" engine with the same model number their oil filter bypasses are setup specifically for their designated oil weights. Also its not uncommon to have different oil pumps in these situations. Also, you are effectively saying you trust the engineers who designated the oil viscosity in that other region over the ones in your own...pssst its the same engineers. ALSO, is the Tacoma available outside of north america? Don't say Hilux its not the same. So now we are comparing different vehicles with different GVWR, come on.

    2. "My truck has squeaky leaf springs, that means toyota engineers are dumb asses and I should use a different oil viscosity"
    - If you don't trust the engineers who designed your truck why did you give them 30-40k of your hard earned money?

    3. "Toyota just wants to sell more trucks so they are purposely telling me to use an inferior engine oil to force me to buy more trucks from them"
    - So yes, capitalism doesn't necessarily emphasize the "Best" products but rather the products consumers are more likley to buy. I dont beleive this is the case in the midsize truck segment, which only gets refreshed every 10 years. Besides Tacoma sales have alot of repeat buyers so customer loyalty is very important.
    - See the answer for #2

Here is my final point. Thicker oil does not mean better protection. In fact as i mentioned earlier it might be detrimental if your pump and bypasses were designed for a certain weight. Manufacturing processes continue to progress and tolerances on todays engines are much tighter than even 20 years ago, a thicker oil may not be able to get into smaller gaps as well as a thinner oil would. In terms of 5w20 vs 0w20, all you are doing is hurting your cold/startup oil performance.

But why? Those are such drastically different engines with different uses. Why not use an oil that is specifically designed to work with those engines? Are you saving a bunch of money buying diesel oil in bulk?

    Because it's about oil.
    I have a theory...
Once upon a time, a vehicle could be modded, both the drivetrain and appearance. Over the years, the OEM's have gradually designed their vehicles (for safety, performance, warranty) in such a way that severely limits modifications. There is a cab mount in the way of big tires. The transmission is sealed, etc. Anyway, oil is one thing that enthusiasts can "change." They have no formal training, they have no test results, all they have is marketing hype and a "feeling" that their chosen oil or viscosity is better. Never mind that the company who makes 25K of these engines a month and warranties them for 60K miles gave them a specification!
What's even better is they get to post about it on a forum! No proof, no nothing, except they "feel" their choice is better.
Oil changes are one of the few things left that enthusiasts can still do in their driveway while drinking beer.
    That is my theory.

Is this how we end up with folks accidentally draining their transmission, shearing housings, etc.?

I have a theory too.... Here, hold my beer.

I didn't say they do it right... which is one of the reasons I buy new and NEVER buy a modded vehicle.

I just traded a 2010 with 120,000 miles. I put 0-20 in at 1000 miles. Just traded it on a 2018. Never had a problem.
