Bakflip MX4 Prelim Review

So after constant leaking I sent a video in and they said the warranty has been aproved and I'll get a new one. Thing just wouldn't stop leaking everywhere.
When I instal the new ones what are the main things to look for? I mean I tried them all with this but if the new ones is made properly then hopefully I won't have to.

 

So I want to get this drain tube problem fixed, but I want to keep the OEM drain ports at the front of the bed open (also because rubber bed mat interference). I'm considering drilling holes in my fenders just below the drains and installing a bulkhead fitting with a 3/4" barb. It's either that or kick it 90° to the between gap between the cab and the bed (I think this is going to be a more difficult option to install). If I put them in the tire wells, I worry about tire wash / mud getting up in and clogging them.

I can't make up my mind on this.

 

I did it like this. The plastic inner fenders will keep the mud out.

 

What size fittings did you use? Did you tap NPT threads into the bed? Or just interference fit it?

 

what brand bed rug is that? is it BedRug?

 

Yes. A year later it’s taken some abuse and still looks awesome. I’d definitely recommend it if you’re looking for one.

 

My main complaint is the dropped down rails are not as sturdily mounted as they were when attached directly to the bed. I can easily pull them around tying stuff down. BUT a fix is to buy new rails and they will fit right above the wheel well. Otherwise, I love it compared to the RollBak I had on my '08 - gain a few inches in usable space.

 

I have an OEM bed mat I bought for $25 from a guy - was long bed but I got out my circular saw and cut it at the front - had it on my '08 and now on my '17 and still looks like new - and has that damn metal fiber running through it so TOUGH.

 

Yea the oem mats are nice but the rug is great if you ever have to crawl in the bed. Nice and soft on the knees.

3/8" I think. Just take the hose with you. I got the barbed fitting and drilled a small hole. Tapped it in with a rubber mallet...

 

I know this thread hasn't seen some action in a bit, but just wanted to say thank you for posting this. This completely solved the leaking issues I had with my MX4 - much appreciated!

I thought that if I buy a cover that has drain tubes I would lay a 2X4 on top of my bed mat over the 2 drain holes then have someone stand on the 2X4 while I crawled under the truck and drilled the drain holes from the underside through the bed and the bed mat. That way the enlarged holes thru the bed and the mat would be lined up perfect.

 

The bed mat is soft rubber and will likely get chewed up or you’ll have an incomplete hole. If you want the bottom drain holes, I would suggest a hole punch for the mat first then use the mat as a guide and drill from the top.

 

My MX4 got shredded by a little hail storm.... Unbelievable how soft that shit is. Pretty disappointing.

 

If you have a low comprehensive deductible and if in your state doesn't charge for those types of claims. you could get your cover replaced.

 

Yeah talked to my insurance agent, copay is $500. About half of what the cover costs, but we get hail relatively often here in Salt Lake which has stopped me from going through with it so far.

 

I have gone down a rabbit hole looking at this forum while installing my new MX4. I have gotten nowhere haha.

 

If you’re installing yourself, and elect to enlarge the drain holes in the bed to accommodate the drain tubes in the cover, be careful on the drivers side, as the drill can easily hit the fuel fill hose.
