True. I would probably never put a bladder of water in the bed. I don't even think I will put in any weight at all this year, I want to see how my Taco does without to start.

 

You can see I am in FL. I grew up in Oklahoma where we got more ice than snow. The "trick" my father taught me was simple and cheap.

Go to a truck stop or farm implement store. Some farms and trucking companies do their own tire work, so that may be another possible source. See the tire guys and ask for a "trash" inner tube. Basically any one with leaks, even a blow out may work. Cut the tube in halve, make a C out of the O, so you can stretch it out. Tie one end at the top of the bed in the back, folding it over to close that end, it does not have to seal. Tie the other end to the opposite rail loosely allowing room for you to shove in a water hose. Fill 'er up, turn off the water and fold the "fill" end securing it like the other. This is done when temps are near freezing, it freezes in a couple/few days. If it drained "too" much, just put the hose in and refill it. You now have a good amount of weight at the tailgate. In the spring when everything is thawing just stab/cut the inner tube. It will drain out as you drive, once empty drop the inner tube back at the place you got it or any garage that does tires for disposal, if you know the guy you will likely not be charged a disposal fee.

Next year, do it again. Cheap, easy, and effective. Work with a cover, Cap, or open bed.

 

Last year I got my taco at the end of October...was in love. First big snowstorm to come after that I fell in love with it all over again...never weighted the bed once and the truck handled all winter beautifully

 

Using smaller containers gets you around the shifting weight problem, I think.

 

OR we could carry a couple of BMW's back there.

Wish beer didn't freeze, a half dozen cases of PBR's would work real well!

 

You just have to allow room for it to freeze. Best method is probably drinking 1/2 of each can/bottle.

I left SoCal in 2008 so I am not sure if the placement of your license plate is legal? I like it though!

 

The best method for PBR would be to to pour the entire contents into the dirt

I'm glad to hear your comments about the backup sensors, I almost bought the stripped down 4wd Taco, now I'm glad I have the backup sensors, blind spot monitor, camera, and whatever else it has...I've had three close calls since May '18- motorcycle going 120mph in blind spot, teenager in Wally World parking lot going 60mph (backup sensor beep & camera did a move), and a short cut off light pole that wasn't visible.

Sorry to hear your troubles though. I have a 1st gen also and I think you can buy aftermarket backup sensors/camera and such, there's a thread about it. @BartMaster1234 might have an idea about it, or the 1st gen thread is very helpful too.

This is interesting... If you damage a "new" car, they can't really sell it as "new" anymore (I think) even if it's been repaired. Seems like there's some loss of value involved. Did they bill you for that?

 

Backup sensors... blind spot monitor... backup camera...

Well we have this great thing called a rear window.

Adding an aftermarket backup camera is relatively easy, just need to wire it to a touchscreen/video radio head (which I’m sure you guys already have)

Aftermarket backup sensors is also a thing. However, they look ugly because the sensors poke out on the bumper since you can’t conceal them.

 

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Quit posting and get back to work on my horns, dammit!
