ok, last question for today, this one is about the differential.

my friends 2002 has LSD and a button to engauge and disengauge it on the dash. my 08 doesn't have the button but my diff has a lable on it that says LSD oil only and I confirmed with the dealer that my TRD Sport does in fact have a LSD.

does it only become active and switch from open to LSD electronically when it is needed?

Not certain but I believe your friend has the locking rear diff which can only be locked in 4L unless he does the locker anytime mod. You have the LSD. The locking rear came with certain packages I don't recall which came with what. The Sport and Offroad. I think the offroad comes with the locker and the sport just the LSD.

the button is not for a real LSD. They have an open differential and the "Auto LSD" actuates the brakes on the wheels that are spinning out of control. The TRD sport and the other trucks with the optional LSD have a true LSD. This cannot be turned on or off. The TRD offroad comes with a locking differential that can be turned off.

I believe all 2009 come with a type of traction control that can be turned off. This was optional on previous models. This traction control is often called an "Auto LSD"

yeah there is a button that has the LSD in the 09 but when i press it, it says auto lsd, does that mean i can burn out or does that engage the lsd

When you turn off the auto lsd you will peel out easier.

    A one legged burnout!

Just to clarify (and perhaps I'm not reading things correctly)...

The Auto LSD is not a traction device (so to speak) like the mechanical LSD and the TRD offroad locker is.

The Auto LSD is operated by the brakes and will help prevent the wheels from spinning by pulsing the brakes similar to ABS. It can help with traction by simply stopping the wheels allowing them to 'grab' again. But it does not apply driving force to the wheels like the mechanical LSD & locker does.

That's the way I understand it, but with one addition. An open differential can be made to perform more like a Mechanical LSD by modulating your brakes. In this sense, the Auto LSD will provide some additional power to the other rear wheel.

Then I have a question. How can I tell which one I have on my truck. I have the Base model but was optioned with the LSD. How would I tell if it was the Auto or the actual LSD? The Sticker on the rear only says LSD is there another way to tell?

well if your wheels start to spin does a light flash on by the speedometer?

if the pumpkin says LSD Oil, then you have a mechanical LSD. If you have a button on your dash, then you have the Auto LSD.

Very well I wasn't sure if it was the same on the 07. Thank you sir.

I have the Mechanical version. Some trucks come with a flashing light? That would suck offroading.

the offroad has an open differential that can be locked. The faux LSD probably comes on all 2009 Tacomas.

I think I'd have to disagree with ya on that....

A mechanical LSD is operated by clutch paks in the differential carrier. The clutch paks hold the wheels together thus allowing the mechanical driving force to be sent to both wheels at the same time (up until the torque forces the clutch paks to disengage). It's not a matter of 50/50 power. When the LSD is working - it's 100% of the power to both wheels at the same time regardless of the traction surface. Until you reach a certain torque load and the clutch paks disengage.

With an Open diff - when one wheel stops...the other wheel spins. THe power goes to the path of least resistance which is still 100% of the power just only at one wheel - nor more & no less. When you apply the brakes (or the Auto LSD), you briefly STOP the spinning wheel which then changes the path of least resistance to the other wheel briefly. This allows the other wheel to *attempt* to gain traction again only because the open carrier changed orientation of where the power was going. There is no mechanical driving force when using the auto lsd or using your brakes in an open diff.
