    Just curious.

If what you say is true then how come the more you crank the coilovers the stiffer it gets? What you say makes sense to me, but the results should be the same ride stiffness Until the shock is over extended ?

Right, you know a lot of shit and i respect your posts bro, so that's why I'm jumping back in :D When you are compressing/preloading the coils at full extension, and it will get harder the more you compress it, but when the truck is on its own weight, the compressed length of the spring should still be the same. So ride quality should still be the same. The harshness people feel is probably more due to being closer to full extension at ride height and topping out their shocks over bumps and stuff.
It's easier to see on my truck, but no matter where I set my ride height, the length of the springs are the same when the truck is sitting on its own weight, so ride quality doesn't change. Just the height.

    Ok This is getting CRAZY...
There are 2 types of "spacer lifts"

    1. The kind that goes on top of the shock, between the shock and the shock mount
    That is THIS kind:
    https://www.roughcountry.com/toyota-leveling-lift-kit-744c.html

    2. The kind that goes between the spring and the top hat of the shock (this one requires you take the shock apart)
That is THIS kind # 1 Will usually not have any noticeable effect on how the truck rides as it does nothing to the springs, dapening or anything like that.
    # 2 WILL have any noticeable effect on how the truck rides as it does compress the spring essentially preloading it.

In functionality are a pair of Kings better than a spacer lift. YES ABSOLUTELY NO QUESTION!
If you are ONLY doing it, just to get a "lifted look" and don't care about ANYTHING ELSE are the Kings better? NOPE not in the least! Both of them will give you EXACTLY the same look. The Kings are better for everything else but when it comes to just the lifted look nope it doesn't matter. You could cut blocks out of wood and get the same look. would that be smart or safe? NOPE Absolutely NOT but you could do it!

Makes sense to me! I recently had to lower my Kings because it would fully extend over every speed bump :anonymous:

I have been in Tacomas with stock suspension, 5100s on 0 setting, 2 level lift setting and with aftermarket coils and stock coils set to highest settings with factory coils. Rest assured the ride quality stays the same. Mine is on the 4th setting, factory coils and rides better than stock, infact it rides better than my son's 2018 sport. No going to get in a dispute over ride quality and if the springs are it compresses or not. This is from Bilstein and my local off road shop who is one of the best shops around. If you want to question me about this send me a PM and I will give you the shop, a name and you can get some real info on the issue.

That's not how most truck coilovers are built tho.

I was mistaken! I was looking at a different type of spring.

@bullaculla it was to my understanding that when you adjust the preload of a coil, whether on a 5100 style c/o or a conventional style, by compressing the coil, it will ride more stiff bc you aren't using the coil to it's full length and travel, the spring rate doesn't change you're correct, but maybe I'm referring to what you mentioned about it hitting full extension on say.. speed bumps.. and that's felt in your bones.. I've been wrong before.. mostly with the CMO (Chief of Marital Operations)- Aloha \mn/

Totally! if you are at the extreme ends of adjustment/travel, then yeah you would definitely feel a difference. But for general driving, it shouldn't feel any different.
At full extension like when the tires are off the ground or shock is off the truck, yes you are compressing the springs more and making it seem harder. But when the truck is sitting on the ground at ride height, the length of the compressed spring should still be the same. Filthy motor sports has lots of good you tube videos on springs and shocks.
I have a branick wall mounted spring compressor so lots of local guys come to my place to adjust ride height, swap coils, build bilsteins, whatever. I think @deeezy came over once and wanted to change to a different spring rate but keep the same ride height, and so we figured out what amount of preload it needed on the new coil and nailed the ride height on the first try.

Can you expand on this? Many people have their 6112s set at highest settings and I don't hear about this or any issues. Is fully extending bad? Is it something more with Kings?

Most shocks do have internal rubber travel stops. And also a lot of shocks like bilsteins and stock shocks have rubber eyes where they mount so it's not as noticeable. Higher end coilovers use spherical bearings in the lower mount so they would be harsher. And also a lot of mid travel shocks are the same as standard travel, just that the internal bumps are removed or cut down to give them more travel.

For the record I don't think Kings are the "best" shock out there. They are just a name. There are shocks with better components and service...just sayin
