Vermont doesnt supply titles to vehicles older than 15 years, so you just have to apply for a title in your state.

Very helpful read, thanks for typing that out. It'll take more experience, definitely.

What are the advantages to regearing to 4.88?

Vermont does not title vehicles older than 15 years old, instead they are issued a registration (which acts as your title). You tell the friendly DMV clerk that you'd like to transfer this truck into your state with new plates and a title, and when they ask you where the title is you present the registration slip and give them the spiel I just gave you. Most likely, they'll have no clue what you're talking about - but a quick call to their supervisor and a quick google search will clear it up.

They will issue you new plates, and more importantly, a new title with your name on it.

    https://dmv.vermont.gov/tax-title/vehicle-title

This would've worked 100% with my DMV, however it was already in California before through a VIN lookup, so I would have to pay the original backfees.

This guy can explain it better. This is an excellent method if the vehicle you're buying has never been in your home state before, and that's where you run into issues. (Like me)

Tons of California exotic car dealers use this method on newly imported vehicles that just passed the 25 y/o import embargo. Go look on CL, and search any 1993 Alfa Romeo or other exotic car and you'll see they're all registered in Vermont.

Easier for the engine to move the truck, most likely better MPG by a fair bit. Won't have to floor it everywhere, because again it'll be easier for the truck to move its weight won't feel loads on the bed or trailer as much. You'll just have higher RPM as a tradeoff, which isn't really bad, and you'll have a lower top speed not that you're racing.

    Here's something fun...

Here's your calculated speed/RPM for your exact truck with 4.30 on the left and 4.88 on the right

It's a very nice method, and it does work. I did lots of research into missing title car registration methods, and that was the most common one.

Your vehicle just cannot have been in your home state before, at least for California (who looks up the VIN). Your state may be very lenient, in which you may be fine.

My 5-Lug was original sold in Sparks, Nevada in 1997 - the first owner (Campbell General Engineering) immidiately drove it to Sacramento, California where it spent its entire life until I brought it to the East Bay in January of 2018. If it never left Sparks, Nevada and held a Nevada registration and tags, my method would have worked perfectly.

Interesting. So you say re-gearing to 4.88 may be the next best option? How much should I be expecting to pay?

If you have gears Zuk does it for around $600 usually and he's right down the street from me in AZ. He's the owner of gearinstalls.com

Should really buy gears and master rebuild kits for them since the labor is the same to have the diff regeared and rebuilt.

I think 4.88 would make a huge difference, your 4th gear locked up would be so much closer to the peak power band RPM.

It does look like Tacomas and 4Runners came in 4.88, they're just rare. There's a few iterations on the 1st Gen Marketplace.

It's $600 for each diff? Buying used may be a better bang for your buck, and I may be lucky and get a rear locker in 4.88

    How much are the gears?

    I'm dumb, it was for a 1995 4Runner. I deleted it. Haha.

You won't find stock 4.88 Tacomas, sorry they're a myth. Old ass toyotas sometimes had them but their shit don't fit your truck. I think he quoted me $600 for both but just e-mail him, he's a really nice guy. I'd just buy the gears from Yukon or Nitro and the rebuild kits and bring them here, you and I could take your diffs out at my place and drive em over to Zuk and he'll refuckulate them in a day or so.

Also fun comparison, here's your truck as it currently sits (265/75/16 tires, A340 transmission, 4.30 axle ratio) vs mine as it currently sits (33/10.5/15, W59, 4.10) look how much my trans makes it easier RPM wise even though I have worse axle gears and bigger tires.

You on left, me on right

Looks like you're right, now that I check each one they're either from a 2nd Gen T4R, or been re-geared.

I might take you up on that offer. I'm planning a trip down to Arizona soon.

The hell happened to him? He's dead in our group chat, and he's dead on here.

I guess the Rust finally overcame him, and he succumbed to the salt.
