Be safe out there everyone! Went snow wheeling three weeks ago and had a vehicle which slid off the trail into one full barrel roll on the downhill side, landing back onto its wheels. A combination of factors went into that situation, but it turned out to be a relatively easy recovery.

Don't want to hear that from today's group. Enjoy!

Hopefully everyone else makes it back ok!

I ended up turning around and coming back early. I didn't make it very far before the km2s became ice skates. After sliding about 50 yards backwards down the trail I figured I would quit before I got in any more trouble since that wasn't even very far in.

I remember sliding backwards down a few sections after they were turned to ice...definitely not the best feeling.

Yeah, it's not exactly fun. The KM2s sucked so badly that they just fall into the ruts and follow them, I couldn't even high side to get into the less packed snow.

@Winkle99 let me borrow his traction boards but even with momentum I couldn't get up it. I suppose I could have winched off his truck but I would have only been in more trouble further up the trail when it got steeper :boink:

@Winkle99 thank you again for letting me borrow the SWR meter and lending me the traction boards, I owe you a beer or two

Since I don't wheel my Tacoma, but an older Land Rover, I have clearance for chains front and rear. They have been invaluable on several winter wheeling trips over the years, to include that one from three weeks ago. The rolled vehicle was drive-able, but the shortest way out was uphill and he couldn't get traction (and was trying to slide back down out of control). After a half dozen winch pulls to get him to the top of the long hill, I drove right up like it was nothing.

Chains should be considered an invaluable piece of kit for winter wheeling. Did anyone read of the recent CO4x4RnR recovery on Bill Moore Lake? The "stuck" vehicle could not make it back up that uphill section when leaving the lake, and the recovery team brought/had a set of chains which fit the stuck vehicle. The stuck vehicle drove themselves out on their own using the chains... and no other assistance. If that rig had carried chains, then that whole crew of volunteers wouldn't have been needed.

<stepping down from my soapbox now>

LOL! Years ago a buddy and I decided to go up Red Cone pass in mid/late November. We made it past a few of the shorter sections of iced over trail, and got out of the heavily treed section into the lightly treed section. There's a portion of the trail there that's fed by a small stream/spring, and in the winter becomes a bobsled run. He did his best high-speed run to reach the top and get past it... but didn't make it. He started sliding backwards down the mountain, and then I realized I needed to throw it in reverse and get out of the way!!! He got it under control before reaching me, and that's when we wised up and turned around.

I've done a 180 backwards on ice in the forest, and to the amazement of those watching, I didn't hit any trees. I wish I could claim there was some skill involved on my part, but pretty sure it was dumb luck. That feeling sucks.

It was a couple weeks ago.

Bring your family and friends, dogs and grub to the...

    Weston Pass Send It Run

    Saturday Nov 17
The masses have spoken and looks to be the most popular, so that'll be the date.

Meeting location will be the corner of CR-5 and 285 where there is a large open parking area that will be impossible to miss. 39.153701,-105.999760
Time will be set as we get closer.

@CO MTN Steve requested a run in remembrance of the shitstorm that transpired late last year.

We will be snow bashing up Weston Pass from the east side with bbq wherever we get stuck. Might be no snow might be tons, should be a good time. It's not technical. Family friendly, plenty of scenery, bring sleds for the kids. Also, bring snow gear. No matter what, it is pretty much guaranteed to be windy.

    1. @Stig - any dates work
    2. @YamaDirtrider
    3. @CharlieCafe - Most likely if it's on a Saturday. I'll bring the blow torch since candles are not allowed
    4. @CO MTN Steve Can't Miss Event! Maybe we should meet at your bare ground with a couple of probably dead Aspens
    5. @Kappes03 - Either Sat is best
    6. @johntoyota any date is fine at the moment but subject to change
    7. @TomTomBikes - FIRST GROUP RUN! any date works for me.
    8. @In4aride - either date pending knee work.
    9. @10tacotrooper - either date works
    10. @Ripcord - Either date works
    11. @huzer - Either date works, pending hockey schedule.
    12. @tacomaco90- Saturdays are best
    13. @mcgov303 - Sat the 17th is best

Speaking of being irresponsible in the snow... bumping this since it was lost pages back.

Its probably snowed 2ft at the top since last weekend and its currently snowing again with predicted 3-6" here in the flat land. So I think the snow is going to be fun! And at this rate, dont be upset if we dont make it to the top of the pass, it'll still be a great time.

Bring snow attire since it'll likely be deep. Everyone can bring their own food or we can grill hot dogs and burgers and have a pot luck type of thing.
