What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

I did. Droped her off before having surgery. Picked her up a week later. Turn key and was ready to go. Dual ARB lockers and 4.88s on 33s. She was very peppy. Mellowed out with 35s now. I say go for it. And im sure you can do the install yourself and save some money too.

Don’t know for sure yet. I don’t own a scan tool so I have to borrow one from auto zone to night after work to check and see. A buddy told me it’s a misfire. We will see.....

 

Everybody says that haha. I hate that I waited months for it. By far one of the most useful mods I've done. It's amazing how crazy Toyota is seeing my '91 Supra had hood struts stock, yet 2nd and 3rd gen Tacoma's still don't have them stock

 

I had 4.88s put in. Great with a MT and 33s. I've heard folks with autos wish they'd done 5.29s.

Isn’t setting the gears up really easy to mess up?

 

Im auto, and plan on going 4.88s. I feel like 5.29s would be a lot for the highway. 4.88s would be much better than my 4.10s.

My bad. I wasnt clear. He could order them assembled and install the diffs...i had my fellow norcal folks willing to help....but a fresh surgery, i would barely be able to sit while everybody wrenched on my truck ? No way. Not fair to them....or me...lol..so i dropped the dough

Dude! These 35s and 15x10 steel wheels aint no joke. And all the armor on this fat pig. Lol. I shoulda done it right. Im commuting 50 miles RT daily, not sure if 5.29s would have been good for that. But i bet offroad i would have wet my pants. I dont plan on changing them. My goal is to SAS eventually. I need to stop being a bitch and start collecting parts


Monte was right tho...as a DD on 35s....its taking a toll. I contemplate going back to 33s....

My goal was to pull a title loan on the truck. 10kish. And drop her off at a fabricator and let them go to town....but some shit came up.....now my plan is on hold

 

I don't see the point for you. Your on smaller tires and you don't offroad and don't have armor. But yeah go for it.

4.88 will be a big change for the tire size you have. It'll be high rpms for the highway, but the motor won't care so long as you don't.

I would not recomend doing them yourself, the rear is fairly easy to do yourself more or less. The front is not due to the clamshell design.

Id go 5.29s as i think i saw you said you wanted 35s. 5.29s all day.

The high rpms aren't that big of a deal, just means your in peak power the whole time. I love the 5.29s and Im a manual so my rpms are even higher. You'd be at like 2800-2900 doing 70mph with 35s. Not that bad really. What Im at doing 70ish now with 31s and a manual with 4.10s.

 

If I had known then what I know now, I would have opted for 5.29s instead of 4.88s.

 

shit. I thought I had my plan set....now you guys got me thinking hard about these 5.29s. I still have decent tread on my 33's so It will be a year or so before I get 35's. looking to do gears next month or so.

 

Won't hurt you. Few guys on here have 33s and 5.29s. Won't want to do more than 70mph though likely. But that's not a deal breaker for me.

 

What's tough is when you're on 33s and are not sure if you want to go 35s in the future but also want to regear now....

 

Well..35s are awesome.

But needed? No.

These trucks are VERY capable with 33s. For all the work that's involved with 35s I'd say most that want them don't really need them at all. 33s are a great size on these trucks.

 

Exactly the dilemma I'm in...your previous post about some of the guys on 33s and 5.29s got me thinking. I can live with going 70mph on the freeway.

My brother in law got 35s on his 3rd gen 4runner and went with 5.29s. It's a nice setup but he is definitely going to have to do a ton of work to get them to clear properly.

Thoughts on the "in between" tire sizes? 295/75-16 or 305/75-16? 4.88s or 5.29s with those?

 

I have 33's 4.88 gears and a pretty heavy lumber rack on the back and now I'm wishing I had gone with 5.29's for sure. But I do have a 2.7 4 banger so I'm sure it's a lot different with a 3.4.

 

@Squeaky Penguin is running 295/75r16s with 4.88s and a manual. It is comparable to my 5.29s and 35s. I know he has worked pretty hard to clear those without doing any tubbing.

You absolutly have to tub the fire wall with 35s. No way around it unless you do a damn drop bracket lift doing a 1'' BL helps a bit but Im not a fan of that either.

 

I am on 33s. It is the gearing in the auto that is the problem. Especially if you are heavy.
