“VOLVO MAF” conversion 1997 to 1998 3.4, supercharger upgrade,

I don’t think this swap works for the 1995 and 1996 ECU for some reason. Toyota changed the ECU in 1997 and this swap will work for the 1997 and 1998 models.
Not sure if you have the right newer ECU??? How would I know the ECU?? I can give you my vin number and Toyota can look it up for you?

The ECM is right behind the glove box. It's actually fairly easy to access and the part number is printed right on it. The one I swapped in is from a 97, but I can't remember if the place I got it from told me it was an early 97 or late 97. I bought this particular one because I read on here that it was the correct one. Maybe @Blackdawg can chime in.

 

That looks like the right PN and is a late 97 ecu. I'll have to dig in again to see the exact months it pertains too

My 97 airbox broke where the MAF connects so it'd suck in dirty air if I were driving it right now. I'm looking to get the 99-04 air box since they're more readily/affordably available.
Would this Volvo MAF section connect perfectly to the 99-04 airbox?
Or would it be to the 97 stock box?
I'm thinking I might just order all new air intake line in the newer style when I get the box and MAF. Would there be a benefit to using the Volvo one over getting a full 99-04 tacoma intake setup? Where would I want which parts? 99-04 airbox for sure. I have the 97 intake tube to the manifold. Just need to figure which section to do for the sensor.
Also, do you have to compensate for the different sized tubing when you use the correct sensor for that diameter pipe? Or does the 97 ECU understand how much air flow it is getting when the pipe and MAF are not the original stock size?

 

Stay with the stock airbox because the ECU and MAF, airbox are all matched to each other.

 

i dont see why him going to a 01 up box would hurt. still uses the same sensor.

and it wouldnt need the volvo adapter. its built into the box

 

@1997tacomav6 Would you perhaps be willing to show your STFT and LTFT next time you're in front of your ScanGauge with the truck fully warmed up and idling? I've never encountered a MAF swap that actually worked without throwing off trims (which would lead to the less tolerant 95-96 ECU running out of adjustment and going lean) but I'd like to know if your ECU knows something is up too and it just isn't out of bounds enough to throw the code. MAFs aren't something you can really play swaptronics with generally, they almost never share duty curves from model to model hence why tuners have to do so much reconfiguration in the ECU when they change to a different maf on a platform.

 

Supercharger is being ported now, so when it gets back I might have new numbers, anyway the Volvo mod works perfectly and I did a dyno
after the mod and the AFR reads perfectly, zero issues and gained a few horses.
Does not work for the 95-96 ECU, I have a 97 ECU.

You can actually look at the AFR reading on
the dyno chart.
But I am spraying methanol at 4.5 boost up
for the supercharger

 

My LTFT went haywire. Still trying to figure out a work around.

 

95-96 has a different ECU and for whatever reason doesn't work

Just discovered this thread, while searching for info on the lean code. 97 tacoma 2.4 stick. I bought it a month or two back, and it appears someone already performed this swap. I noted this morning when investigating the process to clean the MAF sensor, that my MAF did not look like the one I expected to find, based on a video I had watched. I had expected the bullet type fixed, but I found a removable top mounted MAF. It was cold, and I didn't have tools on me, so I noted the tools I need, and came in and wandered the internet and found this. I will investigate further. I also need to read the whole thread. Posting just to join in, for now.

Okay I believe the correct PN is 89661-04310

 

Its either that one or 89661-04410 even though the plugs aren't the same as the earlier trucks. Which maybe that is the main difference. I'm not sure.

I'd love to know what John's ECU is @1997tacomav6 if you could still take a photo of yours.
