I purchased a 2018 TRD 4 x 4 off-road Tacoma about six weeks ago. It took only a few miles to realize the shifting was rather ridiculous, and reading forums on the issue makes it clear that this is a widespread issue for so many people. I have had five Tacoma’s and/or 4-runners during the past 30 years, And have always found them to be as good an Offroad ally as one could find.
This new truck is very tight and I like it in general, except for the shifting nonsense. So if there is someway to improve the erratic shifting pattern it would be great. I took The truck in to Findlay Toyota in Flagstaff, where I purchased it, a couple of weeks ago And asked them to do any TSB that applied to The vehicle. They seemed to understand and theoretically did what they were supposed to. But it resulted in no discernible change to the shifting of the truck.

So then I ran into another person with the identical truck a couple of days ago in San Diego, and he said to go to google and look up the TSB, print it out, then take it to Toyota and tell them to fix it. So I have now done that for the TSB0062-18 And plan on heading to the repair facility in Redlands California as soon as I have time to leave the truck for a couple of hours to see if this will effect any change. I have to say I am rather doubtful, but at the same time a little hopeful that this will actually fix the problem.

If anyone out there with this widespread problem Has any suggestions beyond what I’ve stated above, I would love to hear from them.

    You have two options:
    1. Have either T-SB 0058-18 or 0062-18 applied to receive the updated calibration. The new calibration will improve the trucks drivability and throttle response.
    2. Purchase OV tune for improved performance and shifting if you are still not satisfied.

That's about it. While it isn't perfect, the new calibration from Toyota will help a good bit over the cal you truck came with from the factory.

Forget the TSB's...learn how to drive your 6 speed. There are 2 overdrives designed to give much better mileage. There is a "S" shift on your gear quadrant. Put it in gear 4 (shows up on your panel). Yours trans will then act as a 4 speed; i.e. from stop, it will go through 4 smooth shifts and no more. If you drive over 50, flick it into overdrive gear 5. Higher speed, overdrive gear 6. Works better and more efficient per gear than a stick shift.

This truck shines when you put your foot down. But shifting is and will forever be this Gens downfall.

Get the tune. It’s worth the $700.

    If not:

You’ll try getting a pedal commander, then shift sense, then seeing they just mask the problem, trade in and lose a couple grand.

Do you shift back to four at speeds lower than fifty? I've been doing this my self lately but just wanted to check.

Yes, it is simply a flick of the finger and no clutch! You will also get better MPG, I don't know why, but it did for me.

If it only took a FEW miles to realize you didn't like how it shifted......it was RIDICULOUS of YOU for not taking the truck for a longer test drive before buying it:spending:

Might I make a suggestion that we need a new graphic, a phonograph with a broken record on it.
