The EnTune system is a big reason why I am hesitant to purchase the truck. Yes, I can spend $1000 on a new head unit and speakers.

The truck is AWESOME, WORTH EVERY PENNY and honestly my only real complaint with the head unit was the restart every time i tried to make/receive a phone call. Thankfully a recent update has fixed the crashing problem and everything seems to be working great. Playing music thru Bluetooth has been flawless and even using my phone for GPS when I didn’t feel like using the trucks GPS worked great for the instructions to come thru.

    Anyway, that’s my $0.02 worth.

I recommend getting the truck just don't pay for the upgraded JBL head unit. If you don't like it then buy aftermarket.

After an extended test drive today, I found EnTune "ok". If I ignored the graphics, it did what it needs to do - namely play music and direct me where I need to go. Call me crazy but I found the stock non-JBL sound to be good enough to keep.

I've worked in tech for a long time and have been a power Android user for years. I think the hate for entune is that it has limited app support and is clunky. The nav sucks. Other vehicles were coming with Android auto or car play when the 3rd gens came out. The 19 will be the fourth year on the 3rd gen and still neither of those options are available.

EnTune is kinda like having a 780 resolution TV and then seeing another car with a 4k UHD TV with voice command and app support. You can watch shows on both but the experience is different.

Pretty much. It's not that it's bad. It's that it could be so much better.

Yes the stock speakers are pretty good, they sound even better with a pioneer head unit. I dunno if it’s the equalizers or what.

Looks interesting. Also looks like you have to plug in android phone to get it to work. Not with apple

Funny, the speakers are the first things that I want to swap out. To me they sound like someone threw a blanket over them.

Are you listening to them with an Entune head unit? Or aftermarket head unit? Just curious

Mine is all stock at this point. I was going to start with an upgrade to the speakers and see how that goes.
I can imagine you can make the system sound slightly better but there's only so much you can do with a speaker made out of paper.

A road atlas doesn't keep me updated with traffic conditions.... My phone with Google Maps does. Unfortunately, where I live, it's quite helpful.

Yep, after comparing sound systems and listening to an upgraded Tacoma, you’re right, stock tweeters are garbage. 6x9’s aren’t bad, but I’ve decided to upgrade based on this thread.

Gotta put in my .02. I have a 2017 Pro. I also come from a tech/IT background which makes my hate for the stock system so much more exaggerated. Here is what pisses me off about this system...

The navigation is pure garbage. We’ve taken road trips, local trips, etc. 9/10 if it’s some location we’ve never been to before, it lands us miles away from where we were trying to go. Compared to Google maps, the recommended routes are always obscure and longer leading us in wild goose chases sometimes. This just simply sucks if you’re trying to get somewhere on time and is multiplied when kids in the back are starting to get impatient.

The voice commands and wannabe Siri are just a giant joke to get you to drive your vehicle off a cliff. In this day and age, I expect voice activation and commands to be on par with Siri and Ok Google. What in the world did Toyota think when they gave us the horrible voice assistant? It’s so incredibly “dumb” that it rarely even understands what you ask. Toyota put a bandaid on this starting in 2016 by allowing you to activate Siri or ok google on your phone with the steering wheel phone button. Thanks? This is great and all but when you need directions somewhere while driving, it doesn’t help as the phone is usually in your pocket.

What angers me the most about the above complaint is that Toyota consciously steered clear of Car Play stating that their Entune system worked better with the overall Toyota experience in the car. This is absolute BS. if you’re going to make a claim like that, you BETTER make it as good or better than Siri/Google both with voice commands and the nav system... especially since we are talking 2017/2018 here. This horrendous Entune system has nothing useful on it in regards to apps, navigation, and voice commands. However, Toyota also keeps you hostage with this trash system as they’ve embedded crucial system vehicle settings into the head unit.

I’m straight up voicing my frustration because I was truly hoping an after market company would come out with a system that would retain the system/vehicle settings while providing car play or just a better overall experience with navigation and integration with your phone. So, as a result, I’ve had to work around the factory Entune system as much as possible to get it to do the things I want. I have gone as far as setting up an Apple TV in my truck to allow me to wirelessly mirror my iPhone to the factory screen. This workaround is still way better than trying to use the horrible factory offerings.

Really hoping an aftermarket company comes out with a Toyota specific replacement some day. Our biggest headache right now is with our 2015 Toyota Highlander that unfortunately doesn’t have the iPhine voice commands. We are stuck with the crappy stock system for now.

    /rant

With all that said, I love everything else about Toyota and am a I devout Toyota customer. Love our current Toyota’s and all my past Toyota’s. This makes the Toyota decisions revolving around their infotainment systems harder to swallow.

Entune is not a deal breaker for an otherwise great truck. Entune is however a steaming pile. Toyota owes it to its customers to provide a current, consistent, and across the board compatible system. I’m not the most tech savvy individual, but I would assume the geniuses at Toyota could issue a massive update to fix the reported problems owners are having.

I know the minute I purchase a new head unit, Toyota will send out a real update.:annoyed:

Except that the button on the steering wheel will only do Siri, not ok Google.
