Hood Vibrating

But, the flexing is what's pulling the hoods apart. It seems something like jb weld would keep it together. People even use it to seal cracked engine blocks, the stuff really is like a weld.

 

I thought about using liquid nails as well, but I think the glue they used at the factory flexes like some kind of putty. Its kind a squishy if you press on it, especially after driving your truck (with engine heat)
So far mine is way better and we have been in the triple digits here in Texas south west desert. If you try JB weld keep us posted how it turns out for you.

 

I’m fine looks like all is good but only have 5100 miles. If it starts seperating I’ll perhaps try it.

 

The hood skin is not pulling apart. Its the lack of support points making contact with the hood skin. The putty from the factory remains soft for a reason. You want it to flex with movements of the truck as well as temperature of the metal. No flex means it will create dimples in the hood. The defect is the number of contact points or lack there of. This causes the factory advise to lose contact with the metal. Adding product like 3M NVH to all areas of the hood support increases the contact to reduce vibration and remains flexible to adapt to temps and wind moment.

 

Is it possible to use too much of the NVH? I was going to use the whole bottle and apply it anywhere there is a gap.

 

The only thing I'd worry about is semi-trapped spaces since the engine bay gets some spray in wet weather. Maybe a dashed spacing would be better, dunno, just my .02. Certainly anything more than the few stock blobs would improve the bond proportionately.

Its glue. Under extreme heat from sun and engine heat. Why glue is being used in the first place is the problem.
If we are concerned about cost and glue failing on an expensive item...
A couple of my $350 nike soccer cleats have had their bottom "cleat" unglued and peel right off the upper several times on different models of shoes just from using them as intended.
I just Gorilla glue them back on and they're good to go.
Again..its just glue.

These are $30k trucks..or less. Markup doesn't count. It's the same hood from SR to Pro.
It's not a land rover or amg man. It's still a Japanese truck.
Cost of the truck doesn't mean anything if they're using glue to manufacture parts.
You want an all in one piece frame and hood?.. then look at a more high end vehicle.
Let's get past the 'expensive' 30k tacoma thing already. This is 2018.

 

UPDATE: Got my sr5 back, and I must say they did a good job. Paint matches perfectly, all EO emissions labels, and other sticker in place. Im a master autotech and often do used vehicle inspections for my customers and this one would even fool me. If it ever happens again- im just going to Lowes for a tube of goop lol

That's frustrating. Dealership sourced my fix through a local body shop. Much better. Crazy they haven't addressed this 4 years in.

 

I just picked up my used 2016 and fell outta warranty a week ago. Corp won't even consider covering it which is really disappointing given this issue is wider spread then just a batch or two. I just bought some 3M NVH to do the fix myself next week....at least I know it's done well with the right material just like my oil changes

Dealer ordered a new hood for my OR 18. Was trying to get a sport out of the deal.

 

19 OR DCSB Premium Tech, same problem. Bought an "Amazing Goop" at my local O'rilley Auto store, everything is solid now. I can't believe they haven't remedied that in over 3 years!

 

Just a follow up that the diy fix went well and all that extra hood waffle is gone. I made sure to take the hood off and flip it over on some padding to support the outer edges. That way I didn't put in any dimples from pushing down any section in the middle. After several highway runs since then it is all holding great. Even if I had to do this again in the future it was a quick and effective fix. If anyone is local to 23433 and wants to borrow the application gun just PM me...happy to share since it's $30+ for a possible one-time use.

 

I have the gun and the NVH. Did you just put the NVH on the tabs where the factory stuff was or did you lay a bead along the length of those trusses? Just curious how much the stuff expands. Any pics?

 

For me I saw no expansion, acted like caulk. I did just reapply around the original points that broke away but I really tried to get into those sections well.

New to the forum here. I picked up my 2019 Off Road on Saturday and noticed it had that vibration as well. Didn't think too much of it but researched on the forums and apparently it's a common problem. Taking it to the dealership on Sat morning, wish me luck gentlemen.

 

So this was the Toyota body shop's "fix." Not to mention, it didn't even get rid of the problem as I still have fluttering at highway speeds. Spoke with the shop manager and he said he contacted Toyota corporate and that there is no TSB to fix it, which I already knew. He did at least admit that per his research, it seemed to be a fairly common problem. So here is my dilemma; he said he can caulk all around it, take decals off, and respray the underside of the hood to make it look "close" to factory, or, we can wait on Toyota to replace the hood. I'd prefer option 2 (replace hood), but I'm afraid that it will have the same damn problem. I want a Sport hood given that they have more structural integrity. What should I do, any advice?
