    The clutch is activated by an oil. The hotter it gets then it runs to the outside causing it to lock up and spin the fan. As it cools the oil moves back in and the connection is lost.

    Ah yes, sorry I meant the fan.

    The alternator belt is what spins the fan. It has 3 points. Crank, fan, alt. Same for the PS Crank, fan, Alt.

    Most belts in more modern cars (before serpentine belts) will have 3 points of contact. It merits a better belt tension than just 2 points

    And yeah the AC one is about 1'' smaller.

    Yes, it always is spinning when the engine is running but it should not be solid as you described until the temps in the shaft get very hot (as monte described). In theory, when its cold and spinning, you could stop it (don't try) because it is not locked up solid (yes, even though it is spinning).

    Electric fans are loud as fuck. They also tend to present problems, every guy I've know that put them on hated them. The thermostat's seem to be finicky. Its also really hard to find a good shroud for the e fans for our trucks as its not a super popular thing to do. The mechanical one is much more reliable and bullet proof. After you watch that video you'll see why its works well and won't ever really let you down. The worst that can happen is the fluid goes bad or the valve locks up and either your fan is just stuck on all the time(not gonna hurt anything) or just partially on(not good but will get you home). You CAN swap out the fluid yourself, bit a PITA but it is doable and once done will last a long ass time again.

    There was an awd AMC eagle here for sale a little while ago for 2k I think. Thought about picking it up just to throw bigger tires on and go play in the desert. Think it would be a fun cruiser too.

    Take the alternator belt off and see if you get any play out of the pulley. Can try engaging and disengaging the A/C and see if it’s the bearing on that

    Cooler temps should cause the bearing to shrink slightly and as it gets warm it will expand and not be as loose.

    If it was the thermostat you should have no flow through it until it warms up. Stays closed until the pressure from the heated water expands and opens it.
