Truck Camping Photo Thread

We take all of our old gear and it goes in the "community gear" box for my scout troop. 60% of my troop hammocks consistently, and a good number of those kids have some sweet, well thought kits. Buy once, cry once applies to EVERYTHING LOL. There was nothing wrong with my Netty set up at all. My daughter wanted it (she was hanging in a complete Roo kit).

I use a lot of Dutch's stuff for suspension for both the kids, as well as my kit. I really like the beetle buckle set up.

We have a property in the middle of NH that we set up like our own personal camp ground. My wife sleeps in a Cadillac of a camper, and we all hammock. Plenty of well spaced trees....

 

Yeah, isn't it a hoot the progression that we go through, only to come full circle? Since college I have gone from tent to cab-over camper, to Class C motorhome, to Class A motorhome, back to air conditioned tent, now hammock. Being older and lazier I am now on a minimalist program: take the hammock, leave home a 32-foot South Wind motorhome. My wife too will only sleep in the motorhome, and she doesn't even like doing that. Fine by me! Anyone need a good motorhome?

We really like that area. This is the second time we've gone down with this group and we've had an awesome, laid back time on both trips. I would recommend the Oasis Campground over the other one. Oasis seems to have been maintained better. We stayed at El Indio hot tub which is great for a large group and has one of the best tub setups. If it's just a couple of you La Rana is pretty secluded and has a nice view of the valley.

Also, on the way in, take the dry lake bed, but only if it has not rained in several days. The other road going in is solid washboard the whole way. Either way you come in, make sure whoever goes with you has 7"+ of ground clearance for the last 1/2 mi, just to be safe. The trail is 2wd friendly but has some small ledges/rocks. We had a Kia Sorrento with us and they came close to scraping and had to make a second attempt in a couple of spots.

How do you like it? I have been eyeballing that as an option to appease the wife and maybe talk her into doing some camping with me. Figured it was a cheaper alternate and huge weight savings vs a RTT. I have been bouncing back and forth between a set up like the Pro Z or just a big roomy base camp style tent like this Big Agnes.

 

I have been DYING to find a campsite like this. Used to have a bunch when I lived in WA, but since I moved to CA I haven't found any.

Can fit two queen-size air mattresses in this one with room to move about. I can set it up by myself in less than two minutes. Takedown takes about three minutes. So sturdy I don't even bother to stake out the guy-ropes. They also come in 4,6 and 10 person sizes. No frame or poles to assemble and thread. Just fold it out. Tent already attached to the fully-assembled frame. Genius.

Yeah, I wouldn't use it on the North Slope. And there are better tents out there, but not at this price point. Of the five tents I own I like it the best. My daughter and I slept through a frog-strangler in it that flooded the campsite with two inches of water. The tub of the tent was actually floating on top of the water flowing under it, except for where our two air mattresses were holding it down! Not a single leak, and I had not seam-sealed it yet. As for the horrible ratings...this frame system requires one to have a basic mechanical aptitude. Like pouring piss out of a boot basic. If your significant other drug you camping, and you just didn't really want to be there, I can see my wife over there on the picnic table, typing on her phone, blogging and complaining about setting this up too!

 

Yeah, that was in Oregon. Right next to a crystal clear stream right in front of the truck. Here’s a good spot in California, between Eureka and Redding. Woke up to a covey of quail around the truck then watched about a dozen deer walk right by that had no idea I was in my “blind” treehouse.

Does anyone run a tent that sets up inside the bet (non-RTT)? Looking at getting one but the reviews on Amazon seem mixed

 

I ran the Rightline Gear Truck Tent for a good half-dozen trips. Worked pretty well for the California climate.

Honestly the biggest issue with it is the setup. It's just time consuming threading the poles through the tent, not a lot of tolerance there so it keeps binding up in the fabric and you have to kinda massage the poles through. And dog help you if went through mud on your way to camp because you're going to have fun trying to hook the straps under the body. Aside from that, it's a pretty good upgrade from sleeping on the ground, especially if you have a BedRug and a decent sleeping pad.

 

ok cool I pretty much figured it would be more difficult than a standard tent but I have a mattress and outlet so it seems like an upgrade. for about $180 doesn't hurt to test it out compared to a $2000 RTT

 

Keep an eye out on eBay. I got an "open box" deal on mine from eBay for $80 and the only thing wrong with it was that they stitched one of the small inside pockets up the wrong way (opening facing into the wall).

And I don't think it's any more difficult than a standard tent that uses those poles. I had a 4-person about 10 years ago that setup exactly the same way. I just wish they had hooks that clamp to the poles instead of having to thread the poles through the fabric. Plus, you don't have to pound stakes into the ground and I think that's a win in and of itself.
