I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a new Tacoma and I am trying to determine which tonneau cover to get. I drive a lot of dirt roads and my damn 2008 Jeep Wrangler is like a Dyson vacuum cleaner, it just sucks dirt inside of the cab. Every time I head to the ranch the cab interior is covered in dirt. I know the seals on the cab of the Tacoma are better, but I'm looking for a tonneau with exceptional seals as well.

Any input from owners and how well their tonneau seal out dust and water and what the pros and cons are would be greatly appreciated. I want to buy once.

+1 for Diamondbacks. Have had mine in everything from fast, dusty roads in Utah to absolute brutal storms out here on the coast (and about to see what this dang Hurricane Florence can do) and it’s been pretty much flawless.

Some dust will get in the bed from the seams of the bed itself, but not much. I have a little hand broom, would sweep off the tail gate and last few inches of the bed, set up my bed roll and sleep like a baby. Haven’t had any problems with water, knock on wood.

    DIAMONDBACK!
I added weatherstripping around my tail gate as that’s where dust got in a little, but not where the cover makes its seal. I like this cover as it’s heavy duty, you can walk on it, I mounted my mountain bike fork mounts right to it. I also added lights ($20) underneath with a pin switch ($1.50) for my tailgate that I bought off Amazon. I mounted my axe and flashlight in fist grips underneath the cover and use KB Voodoo’s tonneau mounts to put my roof top tent on. I like the security and my drawer I built slides out perfectly under it 7E6FEAFE-0486-46F6-9915-9D1B3285C0B3.jpg968C07CB-01C4-458A-B630-4EB661EE9C40.jpgAC8F6D29-C244-45C9-BD63-9E486BFBE6E8.jpgF3DA9452-9DBA-4F7C-8D48-1C4E75817B6F.jpgCCDB0090-D016-4EC9-91B7-9CB0A2EEC2CB.jpg

That trail is near the kids fish pond in south shore Tahoe, not far off Highway 50. Through the fish pond parking lot is an OHV trail. Fun route

I’m going to make a full post but I bought KB Voodoo’s AluMax rack system with cargo tray to go over my DB cover, it’s awesome. However as I got the long bed rack for my short bed truck I had to relocate my lock on my cover and tie downs. Not hard, but here’s a preview

Rack is built with Plano Sportsman trunks which fit perfectly. The cargo tray is on sliders and sits right above the cover and my roof top tent goes on top

Relocated the lock and tie down, leaving the tonneau bracket on so that it’s just 4 screws to put the rack on and off

Made a simple hoist system with tie Down straps to put the rack on and off. Heading to Death Valley in a month!

Look them up, Diamondback covers and size to a Tacoma and year. Around $1500 or so for the SE which holds 500lbs. The HD holds 1600lbs or so and is more

I'm a big fan of my Diamondback HD. I questioned whether or not I would ever need the ability to support 1600lbs on top of the thing, but it came in handy in Yellowstone last month. 4 of us were up there with spotting scopes and binoculars trying to spot the Junction Butte wolfpack in Lamar Valley. Hell, had I not forgotten my thermarest when I left town I would've slept up there with the dog the whole trip, too.

I'll say this - don't skip the installation step in the instruction manual where you have a buddy sit atop the cover to compress the seals when you adjust the position of the lock-bars. I tried just pressing down manually on the cover when we installed mine and it wasn't enough. I haven't had any water leakage, but on a bumpy-as-hell rutted-out dirt road across Craters of the Moon National Monument in southern Idaho, a lot of dust got in. I will have to readjust.

I installed my DB cover last Friday, love it so far. I did skip a step they recommended during install... I didn’t have any silicone on me and figured I could deal with it later. We’ve had heavy rain all week and a small amount of water has entered the bed from the cab side corners (where they say to seal with silicone) Wondering if that is the only option to seal those gaps or if anyone could recommend an alternative to siliconePNG image.jpg

I added little strips of the flat weather strip to the odd patterns on the top of the bed sides. Toyota has these weird grooved patterns if you look closely and the water will travel along those under the cover. I did that little fix and compressed the cover a little more by adjusting the locking arms.
