Transfer case swap, maybe.

I have a 2018 Tacoma TRD Offroad. I want to swap in a transfer case out of a 4Runner with a manual shift lever. Does anyone know if the transfer case will bolt right up? Is it plug and play? If so, what years of 4Runner have this transfer case? Thanks a lot guys, I’m in the very early planning stages of swapping in a solid front axle.

 

Manual shift lever still has solenoids lol, unless you are going for looks.
I doubt it would be anywhere close to fitting as this is a new transmission and engine combo.
However, with enough cash anything can happen. Good luck.

That’s nice and all, but it doesn’t change the 4wd knob on the dash. You still have to turn that knob to engage the 4wd but then you can work the twin sticks after that. I want a stick to engage the 4wd like the new 4Runners still have.

Never something I would personally invest in, but I totally get it. The 4wd knob reminds me of this garbage:

 

I totally get this, one great feature I miss from my Jeep is the mechanical 4x4 shifter. It was nice being able to reach down and instantly engage 4HI, no need to look at the dash and see if it was engaged, you already know becuase you put it there. I love my truck but it can suck sometimes sitting there waiting for a blinking dash light.

 

I get it too, going with a solid front axle means removing the add which is the final step in the 4WD arming process and may affect how that motor circuit functions. Plus the motor is just another point of failure. Too bad the j-shift cases out of my generation truck don't fit for ya. FJ case may, but you'd want to see how much the cases have changed between 2nd and 3rd gen tacomas tacomas to get a better idea.

The electronic components in the 4wd system on the 2nd gen do fail... e-locker, 4wd actuator on the T-case, ADD actuator on the front diff,
However those failures happen years later. With a newer Tacoma I’d believe you have quite some time until they become an issue.
Personally, I’ve eliminated the t-case actuator with a manual shift FJ case when installed a crawlbox. I still have the add actuator though.
As mentioned in the post before mine, a member did successfully swap a manual shift t case into a 3rd gen with some heavy modification to the stock trans housing.
Not a mod for the faint hearted.
