I’m right at 4300 miles on truck. When is it early enough for the 5000 mile look over?

Anytime. Nothing happens at the 5k except them telling you they rotated the tires. That's my experience at least.

I usually wait until the maint required soon alert starts popping up before I order the parts I need and pick a day to do it. All that is done at the 5k mark per the toyota maintenance schedule is check your floor mats, check your fluids, check your wiper blades, rotate tires, and visually insect the brakes.

I take mine in just as a check mark, because if something warranty related happens they can simply say you missed your check in and that could’ve caused whatever you issue you may have. They do nothing you can’t do, so it’s up to you if it’s worth going in for 1-2 hours to save yourself a potential headache down the road.

Grab a toolbox and go over all the hardware you can visibly see, specifically on the suspension and driveline. I found numerous loose nuts/bolts on mine and even silenced (mostly) some of the drive train chatter/rattle by torquing my rear leaf spring u-bolts to proper spec (they were approximately less than half of what they should have been!). Rotate your tires, drive another 5000 then change your oil and rotate the tires again. Done.

I'd have to check the FSM, which I don't have access to at the moment... I believe it's 70-something ft lbs. 75 should be fine.

I found the service manual. Under 4wd torque specs it shows this

    "Rear spring U-bolt x Spring U-bolt seat sub-assembly 37 ftlbs"

    That sound a little low...?

I've never had any dealer service (on any vehicle) outside of recalls/service campaigns or warranty work, and never had an issue.

It's been long speculated it should read 73 instead of 37. I torqued mine to 70 and was surprised how many turns it took.

I guess I'm lucky my local dealership offers free 2 year scheduled maintenance with the puchase of any vehicle. I usually do all my own fluid changes diffs, tranny, oil etc but will definitely be taking advantage of the freebie. Although I'm only averaging 300 miles a month (not my daily driver) so I have a feeling it wont be in much

Never had any problems either, I check off everything in the book put date and mileage, when I happen to be near the Dealer I take the book in and they enter the info in the computer. I believe Toyota even has an Owners Website where you can enter your maintenance.

Dealer called me at 3800 miles to schedule appt, I think it was 6 months. They checked fluids, rotated tires and applied the latest tranny TSB at the time. So not much, but I like taking it in regularly and here's why. 1. It allows me to talk to get to know the service advisors, see how much they know, care, etc. 2. Gives me a chance to address any "issues" with the truck.
In almost 2 years, I've learned that your experience depends a lot on the advisor that you get. I know that sounds pretty obvious, but I had no idea what to expect going in. First new toyota and first with this dealer.

That makes sense, but it also lists the NM to be 50, which a little over 36 ftlbs. The listed KGCM matches up too, seems a little less likely to be a typo.

Idk, not trying to start an argument, 37 sounds low, ill probably tighten mine up

I've never known, but it seems like something that's not an issue over tight, but a dangerous one under.

I agree. It's gotta be a typo. 35 ft lbs on a fastener that large just isn't enough IMO--they made all kinds of noise when they were torqued that low from the factory.

In fact, the dealer torqued them to at least 70 (I checked) when I had the TSB done for the rear end whine...

Also, manufacturing does not use the field service manual. Totally different documentation and procedures.

You can easily get the toyotowners app or go online and input the maint. you have done. You put in the date and mileage and what you completed. I do it with our Rav4 and did it during the time of the Toyotacare. It keeps the record attached to your VIN, so when you need to prove something was done it easy to show.
