Air condition problems

Anyone else had issues with there air conditioning system leaking freon?

This will be the third time I've had to trace a leak and add freon to my 2005 Dbl cab, it's only got 39k on the odometer.

 

My AC turns on and off between low and medium. But it is an 05, so problems arise about now. meh

 

Yeah man- It's 5, almost 6, year old parts at this point....Stuff gets old and leaks.

Are you finding the the leaks in the same section of the system??

 

No, each time has been a different fitting that had loosened up.

Yes, I checked them all each time.

 

So there are just fittings coming loose?? No actual holes or anything??

 

So far just loose fittings.
It is definitely a slow leak as it has taken about a month and half between each repair attempt to leak back down.

 

That is annoying to say the least.

I think the 5 year-old-parts argument it just bung. I have a 10 year old Maxima and just a few years back traded a 13 year old Rodeo that blew air as cold as brand new. Before that a 10 year old Acura...the electricals were causing problems (mainly intermittent connections), but the A/C blew as cold as ever.

 

Mine was leaking at the valve (the one that looks like a tire valve).

This is the first vehicle I've ever had problems with the A/C. My current car with 265K still blows as cold as it did when it was new.

 

you may Have slow leak in the compressor
I have my replace in my old GMC truck and it work cold then when got the truck new.

How are you tracing the leaks?

 

A/C dye & UV light.

 

sucks but..... wouldn't it be wise to just go through the entire system and tighten everything down instead of waiting for the next leak to arise, that way you're good for some time? Just a thought...

 

Not much on the age thing either.
Both times we went thru the entire system and tightened everything possible.
Schrader valves seem to be fine.

Dumped some more dye into the system yesterday and going to drive it around a couple of days, maybe something else will show up.

 

Just an FYI. I have worked on vehicles where the dye did not work. What was happening was that the leak was in an area with little to no oil flow so the dye would not come out. These leaks were typically on the low side of the system in the evaporator area. When running, the pressure is low. When you shut them off and park them in the sun, the pressure goes up and the leak gets more intense. Picking it up with a GOOD quality sniffer works in those cases.

Just a thought.

 

Well it turns out the condenser has a slight leak.
Showed just a spot of dye on the left side where the tube goes into the tank (for lack of better wording)

Since this is the 2nd truck my wife and I bought from Toyota as well as the 2010 Prius we picked up last week I decided to take the truck to them and see what they would do even though it is out of warranty.

You would not believe what they said and did!
The wife and I are customers for life!

I had to replace my AC clutch and compressor at 39K so you are not alone. The root of the problem is that the newer Tacomas have a crappy Delphi AC system not the tried and true Denso parts that originally earned Toyota it's reputation for reliability.

 

They called it "good will" and warrantied the condenser.
