I’m 40 and have been at it for a year. It’s really helped me a lot. Also doing Judo. Getting thrown will toughen your old ass right up!

Wrestling was still relatively fresh in my mind when I started. Smashed a lot of people in no-gi, but once the pajamas went on I was like a newborn lol. I love whenever people turtle so I can just leg ride and grind them into the mat

Anybody use a grappling dummy? Thinking about getting one to practice fluid movements.

Had a dream the other night my phone was ringing or something, and I looked at it, and the caller ID said Jiu Jitsu.

Check my build thread...too much to list.
Just saw this thread and it’s making me want to hit the mats. Trained off and on for 2 years with 10th planet near where I live. 3 little kids, work and An ACL injury have been my excuses. Once the doc clears me I need to get back. I felt a lot more centered while training.

Been training at a gym near my house for about three weeks now. Fuck this shit is hard. I’m a little old to be getting in to something like this, 35, but all the people at the gym have been amazing. I was a little intimidated at the start but am starting to find a groove a bit.

Pretty much getting my ass handed to be each rolling session, but I honestly don’t mind. Just pop up laughing, fist bump, and go At it again.

I’m guessing BJJ is like most other sports I’ve learned growing up, awkward as shit in the beginning but they’ll come a day it all clicks and becomes natural. The difference being your constantly dealing with pressure the entire time.

My body is definitely feeling it though.

Curious from you avid rollers, in your opinion what’s a good weekly routin to still build muscle and still be able to compete in class?

I used to lift like 4 times a week but since I started training that doesn’t seem to be possible anymore. I’ve started lifting 2-3 times a week and going to class 3 times a week with random fun cardio in between.

Am I overdoing it or on the right track?

Thanks for the feed back man. Cool, rolling 2-3 times a week is where I feel is a good spot. Haha, I’m getting my ass kicked my purples and black belts. My gym doesn’t have many white or blues. Hence the laughing cause dude I’m trying and learning but those fuckers just know shit I don’t. The laugh is more like the ahhhh moment.

I lift 3 days a week. Train 3 days a week. I also do some running and mountain biking throughout the week for cardio along with some yoga for flexibility and recovery.

When I lift I usually start heavy and taper down to lower weight and up the reps to build muscular endurance. I believe all these things together have benefited my training and my performance when rolling

Thanks for all the feedback guys, my body is starting to adjust, muscles you haven't used in a while being fatigued are taking less time to bounce back, plus staying relaxed more often while rolling. I think I'll be able to get back to my lifting 4-5 times a week, rolling twice, and some boxing/mui thai one or twice a week. That would be the ideal schedule for me I think.

Only trained for a year and a half. White belt. Linxx in Va Beach under Frank Cucci. At 32 I wish I started when I was a kid. Maybe all the 20 year olds wouldn’t whoop me....

Just found this thread! I've been doing BJJ for 20 years and have also focused heavily on Judo for the last 5 years. I've been fortunate to have traveled, trained, and learned from the very best people all over the world and I still consider myself to be a beginner. It also doesn't help that I'm 40 now and have a bit of mileage on the odometer. LOL! Here's a photo where I'm hanging out with some random Brazilian guy in pajamas.... 30713234_10155393593645924_4268905739390_bd5e5a5a88ead1252347b8bb8669d6bb3bffff27.jpg

Yes he is! I learned a lot from him and Henry Aikins. The funny thing is that the concepts they teach are VERY basic but HIGHLY effective. Henry did a seminar where it was an invitation for black belts only, he spent 3 hours working with us and only showed 3 basic techniques that we all learned as white belts. He showed us how to bridge and escape from mount, the cross choke from closed guard, and the key lock/Americana from mount. So I was in a room full of LEGIT competitive black belts and a handful of UFC fighters....we were all BLOWN AWAY by the subtle details Henry gave us. Blew my mind.

I've done almost no groundwork. The rate of injury seems so high in bjj, especially in the lower ranks I'm afraid of coming out broken as I learn. Is there anything I can do to mitigate that?
