I hope not, but fear it could be. For whatever reason my howling has gotten much more pronounced. After the TSB I was happy. I have no idea how or why it has gotten so loud now.

I waited over two months for the "regional guy" to show up.

Well, hopefully it will get resolved.

I had to decide between my Tacoma and 4Runner in order to buy a vehicle for my significant other. I said goodbye to the Tacoma. I’ll decide what’s next for me next September when the 4Runner warranty runs out.

Sure as hell won’t be an early adopter on the mid size trucks coming out.

But by next September there should be about nine months of forum posts on the Ranger. I really hope Ford hits a homerun and lights a fire under Toyotas ass.

Honestly, I’m not sure that Toyota is worried about the Ranger unless they drop the Ranger Raptor. Ford said they won’t bring the Raptor version here. Time will tell. Toyota needs to pick it up sooner than later. I still like my Tacos but they have not been my best trucks. I just want them to fix this mess and move on.

I see you have an 05. That makes me even more bummed out because this issue has been around for so long. Kind of like the AC fans. I had 3 on my second gen before the dealer finally put an aftermarket fan on it (which never broke). Oh, and the wind noise TSB for the front windows. Had that one on this one and my last one.

I’ve driven the current gen ranger overseas....with the 5 cyl diesel.

It’s a very car-like truck. It’s on road dynamics reminded me of our old colorado.

For commuters and people who buy pick ups as a lifestyle accessory, the Ranger will have enough creature comforts to command a sizeable market share.

However a core group of people will still keep the taco.....my truck is a toy to play offroad, mainly hunting and exploring. I cannot see that sub segment crossing over.

I understand you bought it so it’s a different story, but I’ve reached a point as well where I’ve just accepted the truck is shit and that everything is comical. I am so, so sick of dealer visits over nonsense. Zero energy. Zero time. Last thing I want to do on a Saturday morning is sit in a freaking dealer service center. Worse, last thing I want to do is have to take off work for it.

I’m their target segment. I haul stuff (motorcycles, atvs, bikes, kayaks, etc.) but I rarely really need a tough 4x4. I also like the creature comforts.

It’s hard to argue with your approach. My job, like many others, is stressful enough and time is money. It costs me a small fortune to take time off for car repairs so I won’t put up with a problem child long. My issue is I really like this truck. I want it fixed but I also don’t want to get mad every time I drive it. Even my German cars haven’t been this finicky and that’s saying something. But, I literally lived in the shop for the first 18-24 months for my last Taco and all the issues with it eventually got fixed. I’m just trying to decide if I have the time and energy to do this again. I may just sell my Falkens and Rays and move on if this doesn’t get resolved but I’m going to hang in a bit longer, or at least try to.

The service advisor called and said they duplicated my rear differential noise (they would have to be deaf not to) at all the speeds I complained about. They said they worked closely with Toyota TA who now says this is a normal characteristic of the truck. As you can imagine that didn’t sit well. It takes a lot of get me mad but I made it a point to chew every one of them out, all the while telling the dealer that I knew they were stuck in the middle, but that this was such a garbage response. This is especially incredible from a shop that said they’d never heard of this issue when I got the TSB but now it’s normal? Uh, no. The truck didn’t do it when it was new and if it’s normal then why develop a TSB to “fix” it?

The more I deal with Toyota the more obvious it is that they must have some really dumb corporate lawyers. Normal characteristic of the vehicle has been a virtually useless first line of defense to Lemon Law claims for as long as I can recall. It NEVER works so I was certain to let them know that and I can’t wait to depose every one of them. I’m emailing Akio Toyoda and Jim Lentz directly just because I can at this point. I will be going in stealth mode here soon and will just LL this truck and then I’m done. Looking back, the TSB clearly made mine worse, when at first I reported maybe 75% better. The noise came back with a vengeance and now I have it very audible at several different speed ranges when I could only hear it between 55-62 prior to the TSB. I will pick up my truck today and then give myself a couple of days to cool down before I either LL this thing or just drop it off again and tell them to keep it until they fix it.

Like many others on here, I’ve owned a few Tacos. But, my last two were terrible. My second gen (you know, the supposedly good ones) lived in the shop for the first two years of ownership. After that it was great but I said I’d never go through that again. Well, here I am. I’m not doing this again. They can either fix it or I’ll LL it and stop complaining. This is my last Toyota. I’m glad I didn’t put my new Ray 10s and Falkens on or they would have just blamed the tires. It looks like I will be selling some NIB rims and tires if this doesn’t get resolved. This is 2018, not 1968. Trucks should not be doing this and this is wrong. And, yes, I’m a bit ticked now but this is really incredulous that they have just given up on this issue for so many people.

That sucks, by the way my 62 Ford unibody doesn't have a whiny rear end. However the ancient dried out gaskets are a bit noisier.

I had a wrx that had a very similar whine on while applying or feathering the throttle. They found a bad bearing and had it fixed a week later.

I love how these issues are "normal"

That's where I ended up, too, before I traded. "Normal". I think it's pretty clear at this point there ain't no fix in sight. Sorry, man. That sucks.

It’s a bummer too. I searched for my truck for over a year and got exactly what I wanted, but not what I expected/hoped. I get paid to advise and represent people yet I’m not even sure what to tell myself at this point.

I had a good conversation with the service advisor. She was as tight lipped as she could be but made it clear she was muzzled by corporate. Long story short she told me that this truly was her first rear differential issue and that she didn’t understand this being a normal characteristic either. I made it clear my beef was with Toyota, not them, and I think they will help me. All I need is documentation at this point, but it really sucks because I actually just want to drive my truck and not have to look for another one.

I feel for ya man. At this point just get rid of it. Life is too short and you have wasted enough time. Good luck and if you lose a small fortune just going to the dealer, then losing a few grand getting rid of it would be no big deal right? Or you can LL it and endure that pain. Again, good luck and get something you enjoy.

Thanks, and I appreciate the advice. I have too much going on to worry about running back and forth to the shop and fighting with corporate. I’ll like just LL it and then pop them for a bunch of attorney fees. Part of me does want to at least try some Amsoil Severe Gear or even potentially regearing it.
