My dealer is really who worked with me to get the deal. As you know this is my 2nd Tacoma because no matter what they did I had this, and other issues. My dealer stepped up and I think Toyota did too, primarily because of my buying history. I never raised my voice, I never chewed anyone out. I just logically laid out the facts and ended with this: "If you cannot fix this truck then you need to put me in another one without problems and without losing money. If you can't, that's fine. I will go trade for another brand vehicle and take a loss. If I do that though, this will be my last Toyota and I will never recommend a Toyota to anyone else. Your move."
    That worked for me.

Amsoil gear oil won’t help with the howl. Dealer replaced fluid with their own at mile 1000 or something. I then replaced it later with amsoil. No change in the howl unfortunately. Also, some guys have regeared and still have the howl. Not many but there are a few on here that still had the same ole howl after going to 4.88’s. YMMV

My howl is now just as loud as before but at 3 different speeds ranges. I wonder if a lift will help?

Don’t make any investments. Don’t change it from stock if you are serious about going through the lemon law procedures.

Oh, I know. I’ve been there done that several times with LL process and have a perfect record. LOL. But I’d still lift it if I knew for sure it would fix it. Otherwise, I’d never do it unless I knew for sure it would work.

Help me out here. If re-gearing doesn’t get rid of the howl, then what problem are we describing here?

I had a tear down if my howling rear end done when I re-geared and an independent rear end specialist found no issues. The new gears were quiet.

So either this is just a noise as Toyota claims and as some rear end shops have said, or its something more sinister. If the noise persists after a regear what is that indicative of?

I would assume Toyota knows what it is.

I’m not so sure I’d make that assumption. Maybe they do maybe they don’t but they sure as heck have not been able to stop it. But, I do know they were full of crap the whole time they argued that people were basically too stupid to know how and where to place their floor mats on the unintended acceleration cases. Some friends of mine popped them for over $30 million for that little stunt. Based on that you may very well be right. Finally, they may be viewing this from a risk management standpoint and only fix the squeaky wheel cases and buy back the few willing to go the extra mile to LL it. GM did that with the fullsize SUV cabin pressure and vibration issues. Mine was bought back.

Not if you swapped out the rear end in question.

If the noise is made regardless of what gears you run, then it's not a rear diff issue. We have a thread of over 200 pages and God knows how many posts swearing the noise means the rear end is going to implode. If you swap the gears and the noise is still there, then what is the noise?

Now some gears swaps eliminate it, some don't.

We got a lot of heavy thinkers on this forum....so what does that tell us?

Not a clue my friend haha Maybe the new gears had the same issue as the stock that came out? If I could easily find the comments about it I would, but I’m on my cell. I think the one guy had a few sets of 4.88’s installed and they howled like stock. Maybe our axels are really good at transferring sound to the frame? I have no clue. I just try to not drive between 56-61..

And now for me I can’t drive 55-60, 45-50, and 35-40. I also heard it at 15mph today and I don’t hear well.

Not so sure about that, Toyota was swapping out the rears for the first couple years of the 3rd Gens before they came out with the TSB.

Agreed. I’m hoping this is not a cost benefit cover up. I think they don’t know or that the solution is so complicated until they’d have to rebuild part of the truck.

I don’t know squat about automobiles, but that would tell me the noise issue is up the chain. U-joint, bearing, seal, or something else in the drive chain.

It’s what, three years after the launch of the 3rd gen? You would think all of the drivetrain root cause issues would be identified by now.

I’m really just waiting to see if any 2019 owners start reporting shit.

You realize that the entire run of the second gen was afflicted by this same thing? They issued a tsb for it.

That tsb has been covered on this forum.

Whatever this is, it’s been going on for well over 12 years. It has not resulted in any massive issue with failed rear ends.

I’ve heard it in a third gen and in a second gen. I’ve even heard it in a fourth gen 4Runner.

My current third gen doesn’t. Neither does my son’s 2019. That doesn’t mean anything with regards to your current situation....correct?

With regards to the 2nd gen, my youngest son’s truck does and apparently others did as well. Enough that they issued a tsb. See the attached file.

Neither of my 2nd Gens made the noise either.
