NEW TSB, Whine Noise From Rear of Vehicle

It means very little to me but this is not my first Taco rodeo and I’ve been around a while. I have also owned 30 or more new cars and this is the first one I’ve ever had do this. I’ve also owned some beaters back in the day that did. The last one ended up with a seized rear differential that crashed me into a row of gas pumps at a local service station. I used to think this was just a harmless resonance but I’m not so sure now. Mine is getting loud enough to worry me.

 

The point being that just because my truck doesn’t howl doesn’t negate your issue.

Similarly, the fact that your 2nd gen didn’t howl, does not negate the fact that the ENTIRE run of the second gen was afflicted with this very same thing. They issued a TSB for it.

The fact that people think that this is new, or isolated to the third gen completely ignores the existence of that TSB.

 

I got your point the first time. My point was my old one didn’t do this so this issue is new to me. I really don’t care about all the rest. I just want it fixed and shame on Toyota for either not fixing it or being too stupid to fix it.

 

My son’s 2012 with 65k miles whines worse than my 2017 did before the re-gear.

It’s also a much different noise. Easier to induce......

 

Wow that is interesting, looks like that 05 - 13 TSB was resolved by swapping out the rear. Must be why Toyota was swapping out the rears on the 3rd Gens too before the current TSB.

They haven’t addressed this issue. It has existed since at least 2005. They will not address it in any way that is meaningful to you at this point.

I’d recommend following through with LLing it or selling it.

We’re in agreement that when someone has reached this point of frustration and aggravation with a possession, it’s time to be rid of said possession.

 

I also can’t fathom why a company as big as Toyota will let something like this go. I hope the midsize competition gets so heated until they have no choice but to make these trucks better in every way.

 

Good question, wondering if it was 2 totally different issues as the 05 - 13 TSB resolution was to swap out the rear whereas the TSB for the 3rd Gen is different Springs and sound deadening.

 

The noise is different. Hard to describe. One you have to induce (in most cases). The other one is more prevalent.

 

Yes, it has me testy in all areas of life at this point. Not worth it. But, that’s it for me with Toyota. My last two Ford trucks were far better than my Tacos. Heck, my last Chevy was better but the Big 3 make outstanding fullsize tricks so that’s a bit of an apples and oranges comparison.

 

It persisted. I reached out to forum members that had second gens and had the swap. Out of five, four told me that the new rear ends were just as noisy.

On the 4Runner forum, there was a similar issue with the v8 4runners that was successfully dealt with as a harmonic resonance issue.

 

But most of the guys like @nDub that got a new rear differential still had the problem. Heck, I had 4 AC fans on my second gen because the dealer kept putting the same defective fans on it. Maybe the new diffs were defective. Maybe it’s something else altogether....

As some one who is into his 5th decade on this planet, all I can do my friend is tell you to offload it. Life is too short to let possessions possess you.

 

Agreed. I’m going to figure out if I want to do a regear or just LL it. If I LL it I’m going after Toyota for attorney fees for all of my time for this entire process but that’s a small drop in a big bucket for them. The shame of it is this truck is exactly what I wanted and there is nothing else out there that I really like as far as midsize trucks go. Like many others on here, I don’t want any more giant trucks. Maybe I’ll go drive a ZR2.

 

Well, I think test driving other trucks is a great step. We had a Z71 Colorado before the first taco. Before I bought the newest taco I cross shopped the ZR2.

As for the re-gear, the recent reports of a few re-gears not lessening the noise should be looked into. Either they were bad installs or this is indeed a resonance issue.

 

If it's any consolation, I didn't get anything fixed on my truck and it's gotten worse over its year of life. Originally happened in the 50-60 range, now it's all over the map.

I'm bowing out of this thread and will excitedly flip the bird to my truck when it rolls back into the dealer in 27 months...my mileage is on point and I keep it pristine so hopefully I can just walk away. I feel badly for the sorry soul who purchases it, but hopefully they'll have enough sense to look at my service history and won't touch it with a ten foot pole. Even typing that out makes me sick to my stomach that I'm shelling out monthly payments for this thing.

Back to Jeep after this (had Jeep for 10 years and no major issues).

 

I would add that the most trouble free vehicle in my yard out of six current vehicles that were bought new is my son’s Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. Not a single issue.

 

But something mechanical has to be causing this in order for the resonance to change and get worse over time. Something is changing and when it does it changes the sound characteristic. If the noise stayed the same I’d think it’s a harmless resonance but since it changes and gets worse I’m not thinking it’s harmless.
