No need to counter weight, but if you are buying mud and rolls of drywall tape throw them in the bed up against the cab. I do construction and have carried tons of materials like this without any issues.

Will this be a regular thing? To haul drywall? If so, maybe one of those solutions would work.

If not, don’t spend $40+ on some ghetto set up you’ll use once. $20 rents you a truck or trailer. Simple, easy, safe.

It would be best to build a stand that sits between the wheel wells to make that space level. Then lay your 2x4x10s down and haul using ratchet straps to prevent them from slipping out.

Its easiest to see if you can barrow a buddies trailer.

5-6 sheets arent too bad but I’d keep it to that and no more.

An extra set of bolts for the tailgate cables works great for 8 foot sheet goods. For 10 footers, I would probably put three 2X4 - 10' boards under the sheets.DSC03559.jpg

8’ were no problem, but you will definitely want some support at the end of the tailgate for 10’

300 lbs of drywall hanging that far back, you will undoubted be tail heavy. I hope you don't have to go far because your front end will be riding high.

so much easier..and much more useful than spending money on a bunch of stuff to modify your truck to do a very specific job.

He is carrying 6 sheets of drywall, let’s not get carried away. Lots of simple ways to do it without buying a trailer.

Ya, it would really depend on if OP would use the trailer again in the future for other things like mulch, equipment rentals and what not. I'm not sure of his situation, just throwing that out there as an option. If it is truly a one time thing I would get the $20 truck from home depot and call it a day. But, if OP is going to spend money on something (hitch extender, building a platform etc.) I just think that spending that money on something much more useful is a good option. Heck, with a coupon you can get that trailer for a couple hundred bucks...

I built a bed extender out of scrap 2x4's, strapped it to the bes tie downs, put 2x6's in the slots in the bed, put 2-3 2x4x10' on those supports from front to back, and put the drywall on top of that . Worked just fine. Pics after I get home.....if I can remember.

Thanks for all the ideas all.

Trailer would have been nice, but I don't have the room to store it. I went with the bed extender from HF and it was worth every penny IMO. Threw the (2) 2x6's on the wheel well and ran out to the store yesterday. Picked up 8 sheets of 1/2" 10 footers and (2) 2x3x10 to support the drywall length. Ass end didn't sag, no chalk factory and it rode better than I had expected!

    Thanks @beergeek

I am impressed that it set so level. Looks like you could have thrown on a few more.

8 sheets was good, but probably could have gotten away with a couple more. The bed extender has a 350# max, which i would assume is a single point load (i.e Sit on the extender) versus a load distributed evenly and the extender is ancillary.

I’ve done it without 2x4x10s. Just bring a few blankets to throw on the bottom to support a little sag. Tailgate up. Need a friend to load. I would do 12 at a time. Ghetto, yes, effective, yes.

One time shot for drywall, but I can use the bed extender for other stuff in the future.

I could have built something myself, but I already have too much on my plate and didn't need another project:benchpress:.
