Yeah, but it was cheaper than replacing the stock bumper.:cookiemonster:

In that case I would do the same exact thing. I hope Toyota addresses the weak link thing. I have been hit in the rear in 2 accidents between 30 and 40 mph where the only damage was either dings in the rear chrome bumper (08 Taco) or just damage to the shock absorbing material under the bumper cover (99 Maxima). In both cases I kept on driving with no frame issues and needed no obvious repairs.

I was rear ended at 15-20 mph earlier in the year. Externally the bumper looked fine, but most of the plastic pieces were broken and the metal skeleton was bent. The receiver hitch took a hit as well and was bent down slightly. That piece alone in around $500.

Not that difficult. Just be careful. I used bondo spreaders to install.

At 15-20 mph a truck bumper should only have cosmetic damage. I am sure every manufacturer has done the same thing but, for the price of these trucks, and with the advancement of safety, a 3rd gen Tacoma should be better built than a 1st or 2nd gen Tacoma. Correct me if I am wrong in my thinking. I wonder how Ford will be constructing the rear bumper to frame assembly on the new Ranger. Will the "crumple zone" be between the cab and bed like the Tacoma. I expect the same but would hope they are better built.

From what I can tell, Light trucks do not need to meet a bumper requirement, like passenger cars. I suspect none of the truck makers are going to spend more than they have to on bumpers.

What are the Federal regulations for bumpers?

49 CFR Part 581, “The bumper standard,” prescribes performance requirements for passenger cars in low-speed front and rear collisions. It applies to front and rear bumpers on passenger cars to prevent the damage to the car body and safety related equipment at barrier impact speeds of 2½ mph across the full width and 1½ mph on the corners.

This is equivalent to a 5 mph crash into a parked vehicle of the same weight. The standard requires protection in the region 16 to 20 inches above the road surface and the manufacturer can provide the protection by any means it wants. For example, some vehicles do not have a solid bumper across the vehicle, but meet the standard by strategically placed bumper guards and corner guards.

Are all vehicle classes required to meet the Federal bumper standard?

No. The Federal bumper standard does not apply to sport utility vehicles (SUVs), minivans, or pickups trucks; only passenger cars. The agency has chosen not to regulate bumper performance or elevation for these vehicle classes because of the potential compromise to the vehicle utility in operating on loading ramps and off road situations.

They do sit high and tight, getting in is ok, stepping out a little awkward. Hopefully I’ll just get used to them.

I don't think the question is about the federal standard. For me it is why is a 3rd gen Tacoma not as well designed as a 1st or 2nd gen Tacoma in a rear collision.

Force = mass x acceleration. Even a compact 3,000 lb car moving at 15-20 mph has a lot of force.

How much was the Spartan X Customs scoop light? I can’t find a purchase link anywhere. I’d to look it over, thanks in advance.

Put a set of Dissent Offroad (@Dissent86) bike rack mounts and 1up roof rack on. Now I'm waiting to be able to order his aluminum front bumper, hopefully I'm number 1 or close on the order list since I've been asking for months (hint hint ;) :D).

Hey I could use that bumper as a step and climb right in the bed. I learned from my past '16 Tacoma that the plastic bumper cover will crack using the bumper to get in the bed. I won't do that with my '19.

I’m digging the Diamondback bed cover after about a week and a half of use. This thing is built like a tank!
