Lowering a 3rd Gen

Afternoon, fellas.

I was wondering what all I would have to do to lower my TRD Sport by a few inches. I want my truck to ride lower, but not so low that I'm smacking the underbelly everywhere I go. Basically, I want to be driving at roughly the height of a taller car or wagon.

Any kits or brands that are recommended?

How would the suspension geometry be affected?

Is this a project that I could tackle on my own, or should I have it done professionally?

It might be easier to lower the new Ford Ranger. It worked with the F150 Raptor.

I could actually dig an x-runner 3rd gen. I always thought the 2nd gen x-runners were cool. Needs a turbo though...

 

I would like to see a lowered 3rd gen 2wd sport!

 

I mean, its got a car motor in it, might as well make it even more car like.

 

Not my cup of tea, but I’m sure there are plenty of Tacoma’s that NEVER need their stock ground clearance.

 

I really don't get all of the hate, and I'm not really a fan of lowered trucks too much. I honestly would like to see a 2wd sport lowered like the x-runner. Just imagine if you were the only guy that wanted to LIFT his truck...gasp...

 

It’s not you, don’t worry a lot of members here get massive worthless lifts that don’t anything except for looks.

 

Basically, yeah. I never go off-road, and I am far more interested in on-road handling.

 

If you don’t have strong opinions on weirdly-specific-yet-ultimately-pointless aspects of one particular vehicle, are you really living?

 

Thats easy, maybe he likes the look and function of the Tacoma and not the Ridgeline or a crossover. Lots of people like the Tacoma, some of them are from the lowrider scene or former minitruckers.

Slammed Toyotas have been a thing since the 80s. So it is not a far stretch for someone to want to do a modern version of classic slammed Toyota.

 

Do they have shackle kits available for these? I have lowered a couple 2 wd trucks in the past with them. Cheap and easy. Reverse leveling kit. Instead of raise the front, just lower the rear to match.

 

I once gave a coworker crap about buying a 2 wheel drive Jeep Cherokee. He said “we like the style, it’s the right size for us and the kiddos, it’s comfortable, we don’t need a suburban or 4x4, and the price is right”.

A set of 4 banger coils will probably be good for about an inch of drop. Or a custom set of coil overs like the fox 2.0s with a shorter spring. The rear is harder with the shackle design to get it lower. The best bet is a custom spring under conversion and shackle flip like the long travel rigs use bit with a lower height leaf pack.

As a mini trucker and someone who built a 300+ whp mildly dropped frontier having a sport truck is a blast. Yes it's not a sports car but it can still get what you need at the big box stores and carve corners
