So, I have had oil consumption for a while now. I started off a while ago with simple things, oil leaks and pcv. She has no external oil leaks, dry as a bone. I replaced the pcv valve. That had no effect on the consumption. I took my sweet time buying a compression tester and a leak down tester. From harbor freight. Ill get to that later. So some time passes and finally got off my a$$ to do some diagnosis. I head down to work on my day off to look into this "liter" size inconvenience. ba dum ta! Now so you get that, my truck will drink a quart of oil evry 1000 to 1500 miles. :burp:
I pull the plugs and look at them. they look really good and clean. They have about 50k on them. Bosch double platinum "I think". OH YEAH, she has 1446xx miles. I use the borecope at work only to find out the picture is crappy. I was able to make out all 6 cylinders still have factory cross hatching and did not see any excessive ware on the walls. when looking at the open valves i could not see the steams clear enough to see what was going on there. i pull the efi fuse that supplies the fuel pump and hook up the compression tester. cyl 1 = 140 psi number 3= 145 psi. Minimum psi is 145 psi. Im thinking to myself she runs way to strong to have that low of compression...............I use another compression tester and BAM!! compression cyl 1 = 200, next cyl good and so on. (see pic) So all cylinders are 200 - 207 psi. spec is 189 or higher with a max deviation of 15 psi. Im like sweet good compression. now i move on to the leak down. After an hour of trying to get the right fitting for the air hose. I get it guage hooked up. start increasing air, i see both gauges going up annnnd the percentage gauge passes 100 percent. "WHAT THE FUCK" So I turn the air flow off and i see that the percentage gauge only came back down to a 35-40 percent leakage mark.
Insert rant here " Fu!!ing harbor freight tools!!!!! What are the odds that 2 different tools bought at different times would be shit off the shelf? now i did buy them and not use them right away, but that should not have an effect on them. After getting one test done, I call it a day. I have a little info that is helpful. I know my compression is good and the combustion process is good. I feel confident that my consumption is not from worn cylinders or rings. I feel that it is my valve seal. But, she does not smoke, AT ALL. At this point Im willing to dive in to do valve seals. I was thinking I might as well do timing set at this point too.
My question to the community. Is there anything Im missing before i condemn the vale seals? Should i even do the timing kit while in there?
Man it would be nice to have something a little more solid before going this deep.

You need to do a leakdown test. That will determine where your issue is.

I know. but it will not tell me if my valve guide seals are bad for sure.

@Monkeybutt2000 that is the part that messes with my head. there is no smoke for that much consumption. time to hunt down a new leak down tester.

But how do you know. Have some one follow you and hammer down on it a few times.

It doesn't smoke on a cold start. that is easiest time to check.

It could still be a piston ring issue even with the good compression

It will at least narrow it down, if you listen to where the escaping air is coming from. Only 3 paths, exhaust, intake or crankcase. Pull oil fill cap and put a piece of paper over it. You can tape paper over tailpipe.

Guy in the video used his compresson tester at the end of the video without the valve in it
