Looks like it was a good run on Saturday. Definitely keep me posted for the next one...

Snowed out in PA, got some accumulation while we were out on the trails

Not 100% set up, but I’ve got a start. Invested in some gear a couple years back when I skied tuckerman ravine and camped at the lean-to up there. No tent but I have a winter sleeping bag and some other essentials. Id have to figure out a tent situation, I know there’s a few places I could grab a winter tent to rent.

I camped out for a night for the Fall Crawl - no heaters nothing - 30F at night with just my sleeping bag and base layers.

    I froze my ass off.

I have since purchased a Mr. Buddy heater to warm up the tent in the AM and before bed, UCO Triple Candle setup for when I'm sleeping (I'll crack a window open in the tent), emergency blankets to line the inside of the tent and a Therm-A-Rest Insulated Heat reflective sleeping pad. I will likely need a better sleeping bag - it appears mine is really only comfortable down to about 35F...

That's the thing, the advertised rating of a sleeping bag is usually what will keep you from dying, not what's comfortable. You gotta look a little harder to find that 'comfot rating'

This guy used to do it all the time. Now we mostly use a cabin with a wood stove when my buddy and I go winter rabbit hunting, in case his wife wants to bring his kids out for a day visit (they're 4 and 2).

The two biggest issues if you're tenting are moisture control and having a good insulating pad between you and the ground. All of the down in the world in your sleeping bag won't help you if you're on an air pad. Same concepts apply to camping in the back of a truck; if you don't have a window open for ventilation you'll wake up with everything inside your sleeping area covered in ice crystals, and they'll melt as soon as the sun comes up and soak your gear, which means your second night will be really miserable.

That, or put your summer bag inside your winter bag. I have a 0 degree bag thats about 10 years old (rating probably not true anymore), and once it get's below 10 or so I'll put my 15 degree inside it. Last time I used that setup it was -20 and It was probably 90 degrees inside.

A winter tent really isnt necessary unless you're doing extended trips in very cold weather or are expecting large amounts of snow and wind.

If it was your passenger side then it was from that rock that was pinned under there. The tip of it was resting in tight spot between your wheel, leaf, & slider

As much as I'd love to try winter camping I may not have the time or gear this year. I'm definitely going to be doing some hard research in order to figure some trips in the north over the winter though. Then everyone could drive north instead

An air pad with sufficient R value for the temperature can be fine to a certain point, but they're a whole lot of money compared to a foam pad. The problem is that most people don't look into the rating of their pad at all

This is totally true, but probably 95% of the air pads that people have for camping aren't even winter rated. Hell, most of the foam pads that people have aren't winter rated. But I've seen a few people that go out and buy a 10 degree bag, stick a regular pad under it, and then can't figure out why they're cold all night.

But yeah, a good winter-rated air pad will cost you an arm and a leg. But, I suppose you won't have to worry about them being cold that way

I bought this... hopefully it'll be good - awesome ratings and reviews. My buddy used one while she was backpacking in the mountains. Stupid $$ but I had a 20% off coupon.
