I was under the impression that you can get heavier coils. Did you research that?

You can, wheelers know which ones. I think they're the 14" Eibach ones, 650 and 700lb.

    Hey guys,

In anticipation of installing this same exact setup (5160 with Dakar medium) I found this thread. A couple of posters said the 5160s aren’t long enough and then Marie and HS sell it and say it’s fine. What’s the consensus over a year later? Seems a lot of people run this setup with no issues. Is your Bilstein warranty ruined if you run this? Do you need limit straps running this off road? I was under the impression this setup is verified and good to go for solid on and off road use.

Hey bud, my set up has been awesome after having the leaky strut returned and replaced. Headstrong sent back my leaking strut to Bilstein, then honored their warranty. Headstrong sent me a refund. I got a new strut and haven't had a problem since. Great set up for additional capabilities. Just don't jump your truck.

Haha why not jump? Also is the 5160 good to go with Dakars? This thread seemed to have mixed reviews...

After a faulty shock a replacement and a year of normal use, yes they are compatible. My normal use is Home Depot wood runs, mudding and crawling rocks not big enough to high center. We also moved to Oregon with a ton of stuff. Driving for 8 hours loaded down on highway roads seemed to do just fine (uphill, downhill and mountain roads). I got the non heavy duty Dakars. I've never had a problem with my 6112s. Although I did have access to a hydrolic coilover compressor to help build them. 6112 and 5160s are not for jumping, they are for 2" more of height and a bit more capability in the truck. Jumping them will probably bust a seal, leave that to Long Suspension Kings and dampeners please feel free to ask more questions if you like.

Yes, absolutely. Once these cylinders rust out, I'll buy another set.

Ok cool so a lot of the initial worry about the shocks not being long enough with Dakars wasn’t true? You can still get droop and flex off road without worrying about it?

I had the same initial worry and I still do till today that they are not long enough I just never installed limit straps because nothing bad ever happened again. Initially I thought the shocks were over extending but the past year determined that was a lie

I feel like if Headstrong says they are good to go, they are. Also aren’t the OME shocks that are supposed to be run with Dakars actually shorter?

Leaking shocks can happen, I have seen this occur across all brands. There are numerous factors that lead to leaking, including but not limited to, mfg defects, use, damage, improper installation, etc. Some of it can even just be the luck of the draw, honestly.

What we need to look at are the facts not opinions.

Fact: 5160’s have a longer extended length than the OME nitrocharger shocks
Fact: the 5160’s allow for more droop from the Dakar leaf pack over the OME nitrocharger shocks that OME designed for the Dakar leaf packs
Fact: the extension is long enough to constitute longer brake lines which is why extension brackets are included
Fact: the rear shocks for the Tacoma are ALWAYS the limiting factor, even with a completely stock truck
Fact: if you don’t want the shock to fully extend and be the limiting factor and placed under a tremendous amount of strain from the weight of the rear axle (aggressive off-roading) then you can run limit straps. This is regardless of brand of shock (entry level or top of the line) since all shocks are not intended to be used as limit straps.
Fact: Bilstein requires that you go back to the dealer you purchased the shocks from to process warranty.
Fact: Bilstein has a LIMITED 90 DAY WARRANTY on the 5160’s which applies directly to manufacture defects. This is 100% regardless of use since use and wear and tear is not covered. Again ONLY MFG defects. https://productdesk.cart.bilsteinus.com/media/products/bilstein/limited90daywarranty.pdf

It rides great! Much less body roll on On and Off-ramps. Plus the additional 2" is more than enough of lift.

I've taken the rig out to Parie City ORV park a couple times and the suspension has held up great. Done 3 alignments within the pass year, first was right after the install, wnd was 500 miles later and the 3rd was just last week. All alignment numbers have been the same since the first.

    A few minor things...
Just a little positive comment on my part in an attempt to keep pitchforks at bay.

I installed the 6112/5160 combo, 3 leaf AAL, running fronts on 5/5 with a 1/4" shim on the drivers side and I've had no problems with my shocks at all.

The shocks in the rear sit at around 40% sag, and extend an additional 1/2"-3/4" when disconnected from the axle on a lift. They have plenty of down travel on an AAL setup like mine. I can't speak for the Dakar leaf packs, I don't know how much lift they give.

Bilstein makes a great product and it seems like the issues were handled well.

If I were to do it again I'd get the 6112/5160 combo. My truck rides great on the street, I don't offroad much but potholes and bumps are super smooth now.

I did my lift because I found out that ALL of my OEM sport shocks were leaking and completely blown at 50k miles. I wanted nice suspension and the lift was just a bonus I got out of it.

I've been running the Bilstein 6112/5160 with Dakar mediums for about a year. They support the weight of the cap and sometimes RTT much better than stock and do not ride rough. I ended up with about 1.6 - 1.7 inches of lift in the rear with the cap and mat and some gear. I have not had any issues. I also got my parts from Marie at Headstrong. Highly recommend.

Good deal. Just curious how you personally felt on them. I almost bought them, but upgraded for the type of usage, I run ADS rest coilovers with Dakars.
