Funny this talk of dropping the taco for a 4Runner, and I'm throwing the idea around to drop my daily driver car for a stock Tacoma.

The 4Runner interior space is the biggest advantage of an SUV, room in the back for the pup, back seat for the 3yo. But constantly breaking camp to explore is a huge pain. I would say trailer is the best option to drop at base camp and come back for it to hit harder trails, or keep the trailer for mild multi-day trips.

Why not get a cap for the taco, so you can stack higher inside, and get a trailer too. Then, depending on the trip, you can set rtt on top of taco or top of trailer, and you still have huge amount of storage in the bed, freeing up space inside for fam and doggies

Makes sense or get some good doggy crates and put them in the cap.

Could go full expo, camp with cage over it for rtt so weight is not on cap. Or alu cap like @inesshell has for winter. (Looks good imo) and weight nothing beside fiberglass

windoors are the shit! Would love some on my cap

yeah alucab are out of budget, but I was talking more contractor style cap, with side windoors. Those are light and some with integrated roof racks. Iirc @fatfurious2 scored one for cheap back in the days.
