Hey does this seem like too much weight.? The tire is 285/70/17 SL and the wheel is scs RAY10. I counted 39 weights. It’s been road forced balanced. The other three tires have 13, 19, 19 weights respectively. I got one tire replaced already cause at highway speeds I was getting bad steering wheel shakes. After the tire was replaced i still have steering wheel shakes but not as bad than before at highway speeds. The new tire balanced out well with 19 weights. Should I be feeling any shakes at all? Should I replace this tire as well?

 

That seems excessive.

Not to kick ya when your down but I have the 17" Ray 10s, and 265/70r17 E range and at any speed up to a lot (can't say on here), no shakes. Except when I drive it after sitting all night, but once they warm up it goes away.

 

Thanks for the response @RobP62 it really helps. Do the other three tire seem to have to many weights also? Sorry for my ignorance but this is my Forster lifted truck with bigger tires.

No, 13 - 19 doesn't sound excessive. It really depends on the weight more than the amount. If each one is an ounce then that might be considered a lot to an expert. If they are quarter ounce (most likely the case) then no, not a lot at all.

What really blows my mind is the shop that mounted my tires & wheels didn't use a Roadforce machine. I think they just went old school.

I was thinking of your post today on the way in to work. I thought to myself, I wish there was a way to show you how smooth my setup is. I think I might try to shoot some video and rest the phone on the top of the steering wheel.

I honestly think I get more total vehicle vibration from the lightbar mounted to the roof rack (a lot of turbulence) than anything else.

What you can try though is this. Switch that tire with the least amount of weights (assuming it's on the back) to the one (assuming it's on the front) with the most and if you still get the vibes you know it's not the wheel & tire. It could be your rotor. Especially if you performed an emergency braking action. These rotors warp easily. Especially at higher speed under extreme braking conditions.

Sounds like your truck runs like a dream. Wish I could say the same. I just put on new pads and rotors on in April but I’m not counting them out of the equation.

 

Well, still try the test, if you can. I know it's a pain in the ass to swap the tires out, but it might save you some hair loss. You also check the lug nuts if you have a breaker bar and a torque wrench. These lugs should only be tight to 85 ft lbs. If the shop over does it that could warp something.

I hope you get it figured out. My money is on something wrong with the one tire. The reason I say that is because when I had my 4Runner I put Duratracs on it and they had to do the same thing at Firestone. That is add a lot of weight to one. As a matter of fact, during the process the guy dismounted it and remounted it in another position because the weight was too excessive. To me it just never seemed right but I thought it would work itself out. It never did.

Just try to get it resolved before you're out of the allowed time frame for that though. I should have.

 

Thanks for your help I really appreciate it. I’m going to retorque the lugs and swap the tires. Discount tire has already sent me a new tire for one tire that was egg shaped and that was last week so they better give me another new one.

They were balanced and mounted by America’s tire Initially. Then I took them to my local tire shop to be road forced balanced and that’s where they discovered one was egg shaped and the rest weren’t even balanced correctly. I Called discount tire direct and they are shipping me another tire. Hopfully this one works out.

 

do you think the CMC could've been eliminated if you had aftermarket UCAs? I am looking to run a similar setup, 285/70r17 on 17x8.5 -10 offset, -4.30 backspacing and would like to avoid the CMC. I am looking to run bilstein 5100s all around on ome 888 springs and Dakar leaf pack or bilstein 6112/5160.

 

No, I am running Icon delta joint UCA's. It didn't rub except for fully stuffed in a turn...until I aired down to 16-18 psi. Then it REALLY rubbed before the CMC. Most of my wheeling requires me to air down, so the CMC was a necessity.

 

So how are these in the rain?
Thinking of upsizing from 265/70/17 C KO2 to the SL 285/70/17 Nittos.
The KO2s are absolutely horrible in the rain and tried to kill me a few times already.

 

Mine are excellent. I've driven in all types and at all speeds. The worst has been a torrential downpour that created 2"-3" of standing water in the ruts on the paved road up in the country where I live to the point that at 25 - 35 mph the wake was going over the guardrail. The truck just plowed through, not wandering or hydroplaning at all.

Now, no tire will grip on oil soaked asphalt right after it starts to rain so you still need to exercise caution in those conditions. I have drifted around turns in the city. Everything else is not a concern.

 

I just got these mounted and I couldn’t be happier. I researched them a lot and it came down between these and the Duratracs. These got slightly better ratings and I got a good deal.

 

Mine have nearly 20k miles and only 3mm of wear. I put 37psi in the front and 36psi in the rear this morning and on the way home tonight on the highway it was like driving on glass at 80mph.

 

Is that what you normally run them at?

 

All the time. I do the fronts 1 psi more to account for the weight of the engine and the fact that the bed only has a Bak Revolver tonneau and no other weight. We did some calcs on another thread and the expert there came up with the 37 psi number based on size and load range. They are wearing even and I only rotate them every 5k miles.
