I think you could buy a 500.00 bike and use it for a very long time. Just upgrade your parts as they break. This does not apply to full suspension bikes, never buy a 500.00 full suspension bike.

    Yeah.
    LOL, good advice!

The guy at the bike shop told me that unless something gets figured out, the 25% tariff is going to hit bikes coming in from overseas (like Taiwan, where most frames are made). I haven't validated that, but sounds legit. It will be interesting to see what that does to prices and if it gives a slight advantage to US-made frames. Could make carbon a little more interesting since a lot of companies do their carbon stuff in-country.

EDIT: Looks like that only affects stuff made in China, not sure about Taiwan. I don't know that I have much on my bikes that is made in China. Walmart bikes will get more expensive, though.

Quoting myself here now that I've had some good riding time on the new bike. I've extremely happy with this bike for the money. Yeah, I know REI isn't your LBS and doesn't always have the best reputation as a bikers bike shop. Regardless, you can't beat their warranty and for me personally at my local REI they have some solid MTB'ers on staff that are very knowledgeable. I converted to tubeless and added an Xfusion dropper post and otherwise it's still bone stock. Running these tires at ~20psi on single track eats up roots/logs/etc., and the XFusion McQueen fork broke in nicely after a few rides and functions as well (for my needs) as far pricier forks.

Reposting b/c for REI members, there is a 20% off sale coming in the next few days on any full price item. That would make this bike a steal IMO when you consider you'll get another 10% back on dividend. I paid full price b/c I needed a new bike back in the summer, but anyone looking for a good all around intermediate MTB without refinancing a testicle, this is a great option to consider.

Well said on your thoughts. It is a plus size tire? That bike appears as a perfect bikepacking candidate. What's the Head Tube angle?

27.5+ tires (2.8") - I'm really digging the mid-fat size, having only ridden standard 27.5 or fat bikes this size is such a great compromise to get a bit more grip and stability in certain terrain without a lot of loss in agility. fun to get it on edge in switchbacks :)
Head tube angle is 68 degrees

I’m looking for a new Mtn Bike for my 6 year old daughter, currently on a Specialized Hot Rock 20” (grip shift, 1x5, rim brakes) and she’s turning into a little ripper! I’d like to find something with an aluminum frame and disc brakes, primarily because her hot rock is so dam heavy!! Any suggestions? What are your kiddos riding? My older daughter is on a Giant XTCjr which is great, just hard to find.

    Yeah.
Pick mine up tomorrow. Carbon bars and XT brakes going on, about all it needs. Can't wait to get a ride in, but it will likely be next week before I break her in. Heading down to the Ozark NF for a cold camping weekend with a bunch of local folks. You need to get down here.

    finally bought a bike. 2016 trek x caliber 8.

Took it to the shop first to get checked out, walked out with some chester pedals and a helmet. Then i hit the local trails. Crazy how out of shape I am and how long it took for me to get comfortable on a bike again. But man was it fun.

what seat do you guys recommend? my seat sucks.

Also what tires? need a new rear. And since were on that topic. Is going tubeless worth it?

oh, after this picture was taken, the shop guy walked out and told me it was on backwards lol. so it was fixed after the fact.

    Yeah.
New bike day is awesome. Spent yesterday swapping out bars and brakes, making a mess bleeding after running internal cables and getting the right length (just happy that Shimano uses mineral oil and not DOT). Ready for a shakedown run.

Seats are personal, ask the shop if they've got some that you can demo. Most shops do, and if it costs anything they apply that towards the cost of the new seat. That said, I love Chromag seats for my booty.

Tires: Says you're in Florida, so look at what the locals ride. Here in the PNW there are a LOT of Maxxis DHF/DHR setups, but I doubt that'd be necessary in Florideah. Maxxis/WTB/Schwalbe/Bontrager - everyone has their opinions.

Tubeless: If you are riding a lot on trails, yup.
