NICE gun!!! I just put a scope on my Model 99 in .300 Savage last year (gotta count points in PA. and my eyes keep getting worse). Hated to do this, but the original peep sight just wouldn't cut it any more. This was my dad's first 'real' deer rifle he bought....1950 production - not sure what year he bought it, sure it would have been used. These were very popular in PA. probably until the 70's or so. I used it as my second day gun, when running shots were more likely - I can't find a running deer in a scope. Now since it has a higher magnification than my 3x9 on my 760 Remington, it has moved back into the opening day category.

HOWEVER, now, due to all this CWD bullshit, I may not be hunting in PA any more......haven't found a butcher shop along my route to camp yet. You are NOT ALLOWED to bring a carcass across the state line from PA into Ohio or vise-versa!!!!
My two butcher shops in Ohio are only 2.5 miles into the state and my camp is several hundred miles from the CWD positive counties. In fact, I am closer to CWD positive counties in Ohio than the ones in PA!!

Yeah all this CWD stuff is crazy. I live in California and if I hunt in Idaho i cant bring the skull back if there’s any brain matter left inside even though Idaho doesn’t have CWD. I just picked up a model 99 in 300 savage from my buddies uncle I can’t wait to try it out on some hogs this winter.

My father has a 5x57 Mauser in a Mannlicher stock. The rifle is just beautiful, and it shoots so nice. Can't go wrong with a Mauser.

do you cut a lot of steaks out of the hind quarters or do you mostly grind it all? I usually cut the backstraps into steaks and then the farthest back muscle in the rear quarter for cubesteak. Just curious. We use a lot of ground so thats what most of it goes to.

I usually only cut steaks from the back straps because we use so much burger throughout the year. When I lived with my parents we would usually get cube steaks cut from the hinds but we also usually killed 5 or 6 deer a year between me my dad and my sis. And now I aim for 2 and then horn hunt the rest of the season. I get plenty of steaks still this way anyway so it works out good for us

When my dad replaced the 99 Savage to go Muley hunting in the mid 60's in Wyoming, he bought a Winchester model 88 in 308 caliber. My older brother got that one after my dad passed. Probably just end up rusting away, he hasn't hunted since the early 80's. His youngest son started a few years ago, but instead of giving him the model 88 for high school graduation, he bought him a cheaper Savage bolt action. At least I would have used it off and on. Tried to buy or trade for it years ago then just finally gave up.
