Ativan (sp?) beforehand, I was giggling at whatever nature magazine I was reading in the lobby. Suuuuper relaxed.

Actually got annoyed that the nurse started laughing at my jokes.
"Doc, how new is she? These can't be original"

TLDR: do it for the Ativan

I have never thought about this but there may be something to that. Gives me something to think about. Appreciate the comment.

Just to offer up a bit of personal experience.

I'm a project manager for a "small" grading company. We have about 50 employees, but we average about $5-10M in revenue each year. Project/construction management can be a very stressful job. I'm talking can't sleep at night and can't eat because you're stressed. It's something you have to learn to deal with, roll with the punches, and don't take your work home with you. Since you're in survey you already know the rules of the construction industry... if something can go wrong, it's going to, every time. CYA is the name of the game.

There's been many times that I would've traded my higher paying PM job for something more laid back, but the responsibility is also incredibly rewarding when you bring a project to completion and make lifelong partnerships with owners and contractors. Be sure that you get a full understanding of the responsibilities in the position you're thinking about, and make sure you're comfortable with them. If you've got the drive and determination to succeed, the ladder in construction/project management is sky high and can take you a long ways.

This is what I am thinking. I want to go high up the ladder and I understand it can be stressful, but with the stress comes the pay I am after

Just remember that this is not absolute. Not every company compensates the same for those higher positions. One company might be perfect for what you're expecting while the next one might offer little incentive for the additional stress and responsibility. You have to look at the "risk and reward" or work life balance tradeoff case by case.

What is the best way to see if a potential company offers the compensation as you climb the ladder?

Ask during the interview. Your interviewer will love it if you ask what the advancement opportunities are. It shows that you're willing to devote your time to the company to improve and work your way up.

Depends on your wants and abilities too. I have a friend who I doubt could start a lawnmower, much less do anything else. He owned a house and it fell into such disrepair he lost money selling it, think they tore it down.

OP, you hit it big time on the benefits thing. Even as a young and healthy person you will incur medical expenses of some kind. Trust me when I say even a minor thing can cost a lot when you have to pay for it yourself, and if you're not exactly rich in the first place that can really hurt.

While I wish some things were different about my career, the benefits and 401K/pension are two reasons I stay.

You didn't mention the 401K, do you have one? If not, that's another good reason to at least pursue this other opportunity.
