I'm way late and not an engineer, but I do a little HR for a small company. If you don't have access to your bosses boss to verify project priority, get it in writing from your boss if your work on his project might set your project behind. That way you're covered, and your boss has to decide before signing if he really wants to be responsible for your late project.

Sounds like you've taken on a lot of responsibility lately too, maybe a good time to ask for a raise?

This is very true. Sad but true.

Employers in many small business settings are hiring people right out of college for little pay and squeezing all they can out of them until they move on. The relatively low cost great for the employers and gives the employees a lot of experience in a short amount of time. It Can be hard to see when working at a place like that, but the experience is worth the pain. Just can’t get suckered into working in a position like that for too long. Today’s employee in science / engineering small business jobs seems to be averaging 2-3 years at a company and moving on to better opportunities.

I’m not at all saying this is the position you are in @stronghammer , so please don’t take it that way as I know nothing about your company and don’t want to talk it down. Just sharing my experiences from an outside perspective.

 

Oh no I totally get that. This really I think is more of an issue just with the way my boss likes to operate, not by the book, but the way he wants to do it.

 

How large is your company and what is his position?

 

About 110 folks. He is the mechanical engineer PE. I am the only other mechanical engineer. We handle all mechanical projects that come through the company.

1. Owners
2. My boss
3. Me

That would be a sort of hierarchy if we had one lol

 

Gotcha. That is the exact position I was in previously.

How many more years until you can get your PE license?

 

I do not mind working more hours, working harder, etc. Never been afraid of work. I just dont know how to operate with someone telling me something is priority over something else, basically just because they said so and it's more important to them.

 

A thousand. Lol. Nah like 2. But I'm not getting my PE. I dont want it, dont plan to pursue it. Our owners arent PEs. We have 1 electrical PE and 1 mechanical PE.

 

First time I’ve heard an engineer say they didn’t want the professional license.

 

I dont want to be that guy. Life ain't all about money to me. The responsibility and requirements that come with PE arent worth the money to me. I can work as a non PE and make it just as far and be just as smart just have to go have somebody review and stamp it as needed. I would rather get more away from all the nitty gritty engineering and move into more PM work, which my company is allowing to happen. I just dont need to be in the big dick swinging contests with coworkers. I want to work as a team and be successful as a company, not just as an individual.

 

I'll build it if somebody wants one. I had a similar design in mind for a bed rack that bolts in to the bed bolts instead of sitting on the top of the bed rails.

 

Now you don’t sound like an engineer at all!
