Suggestions for trailer lock?

Does anyone have a suggestion for a lock to put on the trailer hitch? I have a small lock that goes in where the pin goes, but am wondering if there are more robust locks to consider (especially because this seems like an easy x-mas gift to ask for).

Edit: I'm asking about a lock on the trailer when it's not hooked up and parked so nobody can hook it up and take it away. I realized I was a bit vague.

Thanks, that's what I was looking for. why would the vehicle make matter?

 

It codes to the ignition key of your vehicle so you don't have that many keys. Love BOLT!

I had several locks then just added my trailer to my insurance for more than I have invested. Cost $17 a year and if someone wants it worse than me then I make money. Of course you could always run a chain or a cable through the wheel and around the frame. I do that when my buddy borrows mine because he lives in the ghetto!

 

My favorite lock is no lock. I've wasted too many man hours cutting off frozen ones and lost key incidents. If somone wants the $15 piece of metal, they can take it. If I'm in a spot where I'm concerned about the whole trailer I just lock the safety chains to the receiver.

 

You can buy a bar that goes through both wheels and locks on one side. Best option? Insure it and don't worry about it. I have enough damn keys already without adding more.

 

Thanks everyone. Got some things to think about. It's not just the trailer, but it also has my raft on it all the time. It's a fishing raft, so when I go fishing but not on the boat (wading), then I'll leave it at the campground. Just want some peace of mind that someone won't just hook it up and take my boat while I'm out standing in the river waving a stick back and forth. Also when it's parked at my house, but I put a 5 gallon bucket over the end of the trailer hookup to keep the electronics out of the rain and figure that should be enough security (ha).

 

If you're worried about it in a campground maybe you need to pick better campgrounds.

I've never had a issue in campgrounds with anything.

Being it's a inflatable if they really wanted it 2 men could lift it and take it off and put it on their own trailer/truck and leave the trailer.

 

I have a pretty expensive trailer but I just insure it heavily and use a standard pin lock.

 

I used to use one of the locking pins in the latch. That's just a pain in the ass to hitch up with. Regular pin from Tractor Supply now with the clip.

 

I've never had any problems in campground either (I leave stoves and such out all the time). I also never had a house catch on fire, but I still have smoke detectors.

I do have a chain/lock for securing the raft (I guess the frame really) to the trailer. I figure that a campground theft will likely be from some opportunity steal, and an unattended raft+trailer is a more enticing and easy to swipe prize than a couple of people unstrapping the raft from the trailer and throwing it in or on another vehicle, and strapping it down it then driving off.

Probably overly paranoid anyway, but it's short money to at least make it more difficult to swipe.

 

You got insurance on the boat? And the trailer? Keep in mind your auto policy carrier is going to tell you the trailer is covered by the auto policy, because a trailer has no motor, it can't tow itself. And when it's home it should be covered under a homeowners policy or renters policy. But you are not covered when the trailer is unhooked and not at home. That's when you need a theft/fire policy. Insurance is the only true way to protect yourself, locks just keep honest people honest.
