    Hi All,

First Question, I've come across a few different sources that GL-5 gear oil can be corrosive in certain gear boxes, particularity Japanese made transfer cases because of the high sulfur content and specific metals in there transfer cases.

My manual for my 1996 Taco says GL-4 for the transfer case and GL-4 or 5 for the differentials. My question is, can we put GL-5 in our transfer case or is it one of these sensitive metal cases?

I ask because no one carries GL-4 spec oil around here, everything is GL-5, so I wonder if GL-5 has evolved to be safer with specific metals?

Second question, my rear diff is rated for 75w-90 oil, if I put in 90w-140 would it have any negative impact on the diff, or just more protection with more resistance (less mpg)? I tow with my truck, so I want to make sure she' as protected as possible.

    Thanks!

    Josh

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
You can put a synthetic GL-4/5 in the transfer/tranny with out issue. Dyno GL-5 will SLOWLY eat any copper alloy which happens to be the bronze synchros in the W58/59 tranny.

Stick with the recommended 75w-90 in the diffs, or go synthetic.

Toyota does say a GL-5 is fine in their tranny though.

I had a 96 tacoma and I put Mobile 1 75W-90 gear oil in everything!!!
Front diff, rear diff, transfer case, & manual transmission.

And since you tow...use the recommended oil and just change it more often.

Using a 90-140w oil could cause more problems because the oil is too thick. Too thick = not flowing properly to lubricate the diff & wheel bearings properly.

Is this a trick question? He said "put a SYNTHETIC GL-4/5 in the transfer/tranny with out issue... DYNO GL-5 will slowly eat..." You said "I just put GL5 Mobil 1 75w90 SYNTHETIC in..."

Translation: You're using SYNTHETIC, so you're fine.
