285/70/17, Bilstein 5100, 887 springs, camburg UCA's. No trimming, no rubbing. 3 years old in December and 0 problems. Been this way since it had 1,000 miles on it and its about hit 40k.

C rated would be nice. Mine are D and they’re pretty stiff. But honestly man, you won’t regret 285.

Now that I think about it, you probably won’t regret 275s. therefore, I’m zero help.

    :pccoffee: It’s still early.

I think the TW consensus is: Do what you think you will most enjoy!

There are tons of pics of 285s and skinnys on TW.

I love my 255s but if I had gone the 285 route I am 99.9% sure I would love those too!

It's your lift not your tires that change the cv angle for the most part. Are you lifted already ?

Wider tires are mostly for looks, if that's the look you want, buy the wide tires. Wider tires are generally heavier, so that will hurt your acceleration, braking, and mpg's.

    285s aren't worth it. Get 315s

(in all seriousness, my 315 STT Pros were cheaper than the same tires in 285, somehow)

I understand, I assumed people would understand lift would be involved with running a 285 off road. I should have used the lift in the title as well, poor choice of words.

If you’re not planning on doing too much off road time then it’s going to be a lot of work to fit 285s for just cosmetics.

You might not rub in daily driving but you will when you articulate. You also might not need a CMC with the proper alignment but more often than not a CMC is needed to not run 285s.

Your fuel mileage will suffer as well. A 275 “C” load weighs a few pounds less, will not rub even when off roaring, and will ride much softer.

    But 285s look cool. :transformer:

No problem ! There are guys on here who have done 285s on stock or with minimal lift.

Thanks! Not to HiJack Ops thread, but from my build thread:

    • Roll-bar: I designed (a 'sweet roll bar') to be mounted into the the factory OEM bed rail system with no drilling. I worked with Sterling Equipment to fabricate and ship, they did a fantastic job and offer other styles/customization. This was built to order so it takes time but totally worth it! Let Wade/Brenda know I sent you!

      The key mods I spec'd:
      • made it fit into the bed rail system so again no drilling to install this was a key goal as bed rail rust is hard to fix
      • only one center post between the two top rails so I could install my lights in any spread I liked
      • no side panels for a more open look
      • I had them carefully taper the bed rail mounting plates to match the tapered profile of the truck...notice how it follows the line of the bed rail evenly and has rounded corners and a front notch for more forward install
      • angles match cab, and it is slightly tall to give the lights better clearance but still look clean
      • you may want to provide the center of mounting hole distance from the top of your bed rail protectors to the center of bed rail system to align the mount holes or drill and paint them yourself
    [IMG]

    • Roll Bar Lights: KC HiLites G46 mounted on roll-bar front tube, I ran the hot wire through the bar and grounded the frame to hide wiring as much as possible
    • Light Clamps: KCs are mounted on forward tube with Rugged Ridge X-Clamps I like the X look of these and the flexibility of being adjustable. Note the bracket clamp hex screw MUST have loc-tite as they otherwise come loose.

    • Hi-Lift Jack: Mounted on the rear roll-bar tube is a 42" Hi-lift all cast jack with add-on First Responder extrication kit base. Later than this pic, I wrapped bar with splice tape to protect finish more cleanly (pic has temp rubber) under u-bolts. Shown with locking wing nut (left) on Hi-lift's brackets and handle keeper. I will update once I finish fabricating a strap lock as well, as nut locks are pretty easily thwarted. This stuff is old time US made high quality.
    • Tonka decal bling (Ebay) search for Tonka Jeep Decals.

IMO, best all-around size for a truck with a lift. Light Off-Road or NOT!

You mind sharing pics? I have the 255's with SEMA wheels and was considering the Stealth 6 wheels. Interested to see how the wider wheel makes the tire look.

285's are for looks. 255's are functionally better.

    Why?
    - Weight (285's weigh a shit-ton = less braking and poor MPG)
    - MPG's (285's destroy this. Why did you buy a 3rd gen if you didn't want better mpg than a 2nd gen)
    - Performance (less engine power due to more weight = more strain on engine and tranny over life of vehicle)
    - Size (285's are a full-size truck tire)
    - Steering (skinnier tires perform better steering on different surfaces ESPECIALLY ice - think ice skate vs tennis shoe)

Note: If you run ALOT of weight (and I mean alot) a wider tire can help with stability while turning, but you can also take care of that with other things like good suspension

And before all the 285 bros show up and start flexing...take a look at some of the best offroading vehicles in Australia and Africa, namely Land Cruisers and Rovers...you don't see wide tires on this rigs often...just saying

    Just go buy 285s.

I ran Cooper Discoverer AT3s in 275 and was very happy with them. Not too aggressive for road driving, but did what I wanted Them to.

I’m sure there are other great tires in that size though.

OP if you asked me when I was spending countless hours stuffing trimming to get 285s to fit I'd say it's absolutely not worth it. Now that I have full clearance at lock I'd say it's absolutely worth it.
