What Have You Done To Your 2nd Gen Tacoma Today?

I’m having an odd issue. I occasionally put the truck in 4wd when I’m not at highway speeds, just to keep things moving up front.

When in 4wd, if you turn the wheels beyond 50% in either direction, the truck roars, stutters, and the tires lock up in back. When you take it out of 4wd, there is a slight clunk.

I hate to ask: how much is this gonna cost?

I'm 75% sure it's 1/8" BSP
but 25% might be 1/8" BSPT

The fob programmed no problem. Couldn't get the chip to program, so poached one from one of my stock keys.

I doubt anything is wrong, but your actions might be creating an expensive fix
For 4 wheel drive to work, the tires have to slip a bit. If you're in 4 wheel drive on pavement, there is no slip possible and you're likely to blow something up.
Test on gravel, never on pavement

 

Thanks for the tip - that makes me feel better. Anytime it happens, I put it back into 2wd after the first time.

I did something similar with 2 single size foam 3" sheets. If I recall they were 10 bucks each at jo ann fabrics with a bogo coupon. Super comfy and cheap. The whole platform is modular and can be popped in or out in 2 minutes.

Ive never heard of this, hopefully I don't blow something up when I put it in 4WD tomorrow morning. Were supposed to get a few inches of snow mixed with Ice tonight. I generally put the truck in 4WD in the garage as soon as i start it. I bet Ive shifted to 4WD 1000 times over the last 20 years while on pavement. Ill report back tomorrow.

It's not the shifting into 4WD that is the problem. Turning on dry pavement (or other nonslip surfaces) will get your axles in a bind because the wheels want to (and do) travel different distances around a corner. Because the tires don't slip, the axle binds. Don't do sharp turns on a nonslip surface in 4WD.

Driveline binding is a real issue, but if you're going in a straight line you likely bind.

 

I've actually noticed very little "binding" while in 4WD in the Taco as compared to other 4WD vehicles that I have owned. And this covers Pavement, concrete, sand, dirt, rock, snow, ect... Anytime I am in 4WD and I feel the drive lines "binding" my rule is not to fight it. If I feel the wheel fight back I just let it have its way until I feel the pressure release. Unless I am stuck, then you have to fight it to get out. But you don't usually get stuck on pavement so like you said, the "binding" is always less noticeable off road.

Nailed It! But it was a 100% factual statement. I really have driven 1000's of miles on pavement, while in 4WD, and never had any major mechanical issues. I am just speaking from personal experience that I don't buy into the no 4WD on pavement crap. My only self rule is I stay under 50 MPH while in 4WD, I figure if its safe enough to drive faster than that; then i don't really need 4WD anyway.

I'll probably use my spare amber lights as ditch lights. But if they fail I'll be buying the side shooters!
