Now all of those bizarre stock shift behaviors that I hated make sense. Well, ok, they still don't make sense, but at least I think I understand why they used to happen. Because there's no differentiation between up and down, the truck just grabs whatever gear happens to be the closest match to the ideal set of parameters, even if that gear choice is completely stupid given the driving context.

"The Intern" then fluffed it off unfinished on an unsuspecting yet trusting public (Us)
Those of us that knew what this truck should really drive like thought we were focked and then, Mat entered the picture...

yes exactly. It's definitely a *new* way of doing things. and has made it that much more difficult to tune (before).
When you think about it, it is actually a really smart way giving the transmission a high degree of "shifting freedom"... basically saying "lets determine the limits only, and let the ECU calculate everything else). Therefore, you the driver will never, ever be in control of the transmission completely. Your accelerator pedal (right foot) only determines 1 piece of the equation to tell the transmission what to do.

    Like this : Shift = A + B + C + 1(D * F) (and your foot is F).. A, B, C, D is completely under the ECUs control.

Thinking about it is really funny.. you floor it expecting 3rd gear and the ECU says hmm no lets go to 5600 RPM in second and shift 0.5 seconds later. Why, because it's Within the limit boundary. hah

Reality is though the transmission goes completely insane.

Best news I can give you is when I tested out disabling all other tables the transmission acted exactly like transmissions did 10 years ago. It would always shift at the predetermined points (axle speed) based on throttle angle. Every time.
Now, we can create a shift curve so that it shifts at a rising curve based on accel angle... and it will use ONE! Table to determine transmission output torque.

I'll have a video of it soon.

The transmission didn't feel loose and sloppy.

Does any of this new stuff you’ve found also affect the MT in any way? I thought you’d mentioned at one point the MT also has some funky table speed voodoo thing

Not really. The MT is simpler, and uses 3D accelerator table to torque conversion tables to make it all work.
But those same tables control response for each gear, and can be tuned. It's why 3rd gear may feel amazing and 5th may feel like a dead fish (for example)

There is a time for "Loose & Sloppy" and This ain't it !

Good sleuthin' Mat. Not only am I impressed but I'm glad you're still interested in getting to the bottom of this.

Some days it seems like a couple of guys here think it's your responsibility to make this truck run right and lose sight of the fact that your name isn't "Toyota".
Money aside it seems like a personal thing for you to find out where things went wrong and make it better.
In my mind, it should have been "them" doing for us what you have done.

    Just the same I'm just grateful it is getting done and no-one has pissed you off to the degree of you saying;
"Sorry boys, that's all I can do".... and walking away. My hat is off to you ! :hattip:

And the problem with that is that the driver (of an OEM tuned truck) never ever knows for sure how the vehicle is going to respond. :annoyed:

This is great news. Drive by cable was so much easier.
How many variables are you using when determining the prescribed shift curve?

Major breakthroughs here and it does actually make sense in the context of someone who's been driving this slushbox for the last 2 years and scratching my head numerous times wondering why the trans behaves the way it does, learning is one piece of it but even the learning isn't AS bad on the TSB but the timing of up/downshifts can still be very erratic even though the TSB has smoothed them out quite a bit. A true, predictable shift curve that takes the "what the hell is happening" out of driving this truck would be a huge deal. And if you nail it, I'd suggest hiring more staff to keep up with orders and tickets so you can head to Africa and watch that "mailbox money" roll in :)
