I have an iPod touch that has thousands of songs on it from various friend's iTunes. My question is, if I try and update my itouch to ios 4 will I lose all that music that isn't on MY iTunes? If so, what are my options to transfer the music from the iPod touch to another source, like an external hard drive of some sort...or some software that does it for me.

I would ultimately like to get all the songs from this iPod to mu authorized iTunes.

I used Sharepod with good results.

How did you get the songs from your friends in the first place?

Having the actual copies of the song files on your computer is the best way to 'not' lose anything.

Aside from using Sharepod.... Ask your friends to burn you a CD or DVD.

With iPods you can make the choice to manually manage music, you can take any songs from any iTunes...but those songs can't be taken off the device onto your personal iTunes.

I'll try the sharepod option, cuz having a bunch of CDs to rip would take some time.

    Thanks

It's a good idea to get all your song files on your computer anyway (backups) and especially separated from itunes. That way - the next time you run into this problem....you don't need to do anything but drag & drop your collection into your library.

If you want to get your music off the iPod Touch, do this:

    Connect your iPod.
Go into iTunes, and check the box that says "Enable Disk Use."
    Go to My Computer.
    Open your iPod Touch
    Go to folder settings
    Go to the View tab
Scroll down and check "Show hidden folders"
    Hit OK
Click on iPod Control (should be transparent, this means that it is hidden)
    Go to Music
And you should see a bunch of folders from F00 to F49 (depending on capacity)
Copy all of those folders to your music folder on your computer
Then, go into each individual folder, cut and paste the songs out of there and into a preferred folder

If you plug your iPod Touch in, and it gives you the option to back it up before the update, then do that :)

    Memory or hard drive space?

I had to ask, because they are two totally different things.

I guess its hard drive space...I cant add anymore songs to iTunes cause of space issues.

Are you actually maxed out of hard drive space? What's your computer say that you have used and unused disc space?

Itunes can be a royal pain in the ass sometimes. I don't know much about itunes but I know enough that my husband and I moved our entire music collection to an external hard drive and we manage the music ourselves. We don't allow itunes to do any of the 'organizing' (so to speak). Seems we had more problems with how it 'wanted' to do things. We have a network of 2 computers linked together and that was probably half the problem.

An external HDD is going to run you about $70 for about 250 GB. An internal 320 is going to run you $60.

Buy an internal HDD and an enclosure.
Remove current internal HDD and install new one.
    Reinstall OS
    Reinstall programs/applications
Put old internal HDD into the new enclosure
    Plug it into your computer
Copy all of your music back over and important files/docs
Reformat it and use an an external HDD/back up device

I highly recommend using the automatic sync and let iTunes organize your folders. It keeps you from losing all of your music.

I just wanted to thank you Viet and Janster for the tips. I realized my comp has an empty slot for an extra hard drive, so I just went down to Best Buy and got one...plugged it in, and solved all my problems.

Along with Sharepod, I was apple to accomplish everything I needed to do. Which was, get a lot of music on my comp (from my iPod) to transfer over to the new iPhone 4 32g (from an iPhone 3g 8g) I just got...and, to eliminate my ipod Touch all together. Now I have everything sorted out beautifully .
