Hearing you guys talk about the use of this cluster panel, it occurs to me that the Ford's biggest fear is that the Ranger cannibalizes F150 sales.

They are trying too hard to differentiate

All manufacturers cut corners somewhere, those same guys complaining about lack of a mechanical tach could bitch about lack of power seats and disc brakes from our Trucks.

i never understand people like you that are so accepting of complacency and poor design.

The point is that it's executed poorly and could easily have been done better but is not because Ford is cheap.

And yes, that same excuse can be used on any manufacturer including Toyota for the dumb drum brakes.

I am not excusing it, just accepting reality. If they put the best of everything on the vehicle its going to cost as much as a Porsche so they have to look at areas of least importance to save money to keep the price affordable.

Back in my flying days the transition to the glass cockpit was a bitch at first. You get used to looking at stuff and will never miss the analog.

Define proper. Unless you are on the engineering team that gets their specs from marketing and sales and has to work within the price constraint of your target, you have no clue what proper design means.

What repairs have been done? I dont get it man I've almost got 70k on my 16 OR . The only issue was a CPS recall with zero trouble codes or notable issues . More of a precautionary recall. I'm insanely picky and also a dealer technician and know what to look for . 45k of those miles where even lifted with armor. I've even drove through water 1/4 way up the doors and drove in the water at the beach/sand in the desert. Cross country trips from Atlanta to San Diego. Going to Michigan this winter.

I have a 2018 DCSB Auto TRD OR that I bought in FEB. I have 249xx miles on it. No issues at all.

The vehicle I had before that 2018 was a 2016 in the same config, that had 45k miles on when i totaled it. I haven't had any reliability issues with any 3rd gen.

with any mass produced item there will be outliers and failures. what matters is in the big picture is how many are one offs and how many are actually due to a design failure or defect in production.

people pay $80k for new Raptors, yet many upon many have had engines seize due to oil pump failures. now is that due to a design failure with the OP, a defect in the OP, or simply due to cost cutting they used an OP that wasn't able to meet the performance requirements. Who knows.

taking into account some of the known issues with the tacoma, i have yet to hear one person on this forum or elsewhere actually have an engine or transmission failure. The CPS issue being the closest and an extremely easy fix. Diff weep is not catastrophic. Poor shifting is not catastrophic. You get where I'm going.

With that in mind, I have zero plans to consider a new Ranger simply because Ford's track record with the EB line of engines is poor at best. But the masses will flock to it since it's new and reinforce Ford's behavior of cost cutting and reliability issues.

Lol. That’s basically the same dash that’s in my 18 fusion. There are many different options for what the gauge on the left and right show, and the tack is one of the options. Looks good to me, and the fusion dash is awesome and classy.

There is some extremely apparent brand bias on this forum, which is fine as you’ll find it on any enthusiast forum. I do not have brand bias whatsoever. I buy the best vehicles on the market (opinion). I’ve had new silverados, several F150s, 250s, fusion, BMW X5 (rip), my taco.. ford always pushes the envelope, so some small shortcomings on reliability is fine with me as they have an awesome warranty. I’ve never been stranded in any vehicle I’ve owned, let alone any of my fords.

It’s also worth noting there are more ecoboost engines on the road than every Tacoma ever made, so a small failure rate is going to be far more apparent in this massive of a market.

Matter of opinion I guess. I've designed GUI interfaces and that design is bad and inefficient.

It's biggest flaw is inefficient use of available space in cluster. Even the shape of the display wastes valuable real estate that could be used to either provided information that's easier to read, or more information pertinent to the driver.

The right screen provides you a compass, radio display, or phone. Some have hacked it to also display limited HVAC information.

The left screen can display a full digital tachometer, Range information, and real time MPG. The biggest flaw is that you cannot have a full digital tachometer and real time MPG at the same time.

Another important factor is how long it takes to read information displayed. if the color palette doesn't have the proper contrast, certain data takes too long to read and therefore is a distraction.

Toyota has this issue in their center display on the Tacoma. Put your truck in S mode and you'll see the small display on the bottom left change from D to S4. However the color choice of the displayed number is light blue on a silver background. That's the wrong contrast and yes it can be read, but it takes upwards of 1-2 seconds vs the desired fraction of a second it should take to read a display.

Lastly, you're Fusion is an appliance. It's designed to get a person from point a to point b in reasonable comfort. The fact Ford used this same cluster for a vehicle like the Ranger makes me question the way the see their own product's purpose to consumers.

The fusion is definitely an appliance to me. But the ranger and Tacoma and even my F-150 could be considered an appliance. You’re getting so overworked by a gauge cluster that it almost makes me laugh.... the cluster doesn’t define a vehicle in its entirety.

i guess because it's so easy to do right there's no reason to do it wrong.
