Agreed. We had that several years back. Power out all over eastern KY and trees falling, tops ripped out of them.

I just hope it pins the deer down til Saturday and they get up and moving for me. Need some meat! Although the forecasted high of 50° and partly cloudy doesn't make me excited. Who knows...

I guess the whole point I’ve been trying to make is, yes we eat deer too but, in my opinion I would much rather eat a doe than a rutted up buck. We have a pretty healthy herd here in west central Illinois so does are plentiful in most places. We have 10’s of thousands of acres that are leased by outfitters and non-residents. Illinois sells up to 25k non-resident archery permits, that doesn’t include non-resident shotgun or muzzleloader permits. Killing a 150 inch here can be quite an accomplishment because of the tremendous hunting pressure. I think that the mature buck whitetail is a beautiful animal . When I am fortunate enough to kill a big buck I have it mounted and hang it on the wall for many years of enjoyment and memories. When we want meat we shoot does, better tasting and helps control the herd. BTW when we do kill a big one we donate or give the meat away, never goes to waste.

Ive always wondered how the guide/lease industry affected locals where you live.a friend went to Ill. on a hunt. bow shot a nice one. jumped fence onto another property. landowner would not let them go retrieve it. then that landowner went to get it himself. they called game warden and was nothin he could do.thats really fd up. oh and nice post!!

This is my worry at the new spot. Under 40 acre area, has some semblance of a fence line around it and road on one side. I'll likely just head shoot a doe, but want a Euro-mount buck if I'm lucky to get one.
Too damn lower middle class (aka normal American) to afford a nice cape wall mount.

Thanks!! The outfitting industry has created a lot of bad blood between people around here, even amongst friends. I don’t have a problem with non-residents wanting to come here and hunt but it needs to be more closely regulated. The state of Illinois is afraid to do what’s right by implementing more sensible management tools. Our state is so broke they use deer hunting as a cash cow. Every time you turn around they’re adding seasons or extending seasons in hopes of selling more permits. The only management tool we have in place is a 2 buck limit. If I wanted to pay for all the permits I could legally kill 50 or 100 deer but only 2 bucks. So with virtually unlimited permits, residents and non-residents we have way more outfitters than we need. Our state government is in bed with the Farm boards and insurance companies and all they want to do is kill, kill, kill and sell more permits.

At least I can sleep okay at best while telling myself the lie that my "wasted" money on past unused tags/licenses went to habitat rehab and etc. here in Kentucky.

Good for you...all our money goes to Chicago. We used to have a Dept. of Conservation but now it’s the Illinois Dept. of Natural Resources and “what conservation”!!

    What I did:
Hot plate and big soup pot outside. Cut off as much meat and eyes as I could. Let boil with water and borax or laundry detergent (as in simmer - when the water is steaming not really bubbling)
Take out every 45 to 60 minutes to pull off meats (nose bones fell out as well as some teeth - save for later)
Took about 4 hours to get all the meat and cartilage out of nose
put skull and parts in water and dawn soap for about 3-4 days to degrease
Then put in hydrogen peroxide 3% for 3 days (don't touch the antlers as it will bleach them

He actually takes out the nose stuff to get a deeper clean. Dude's definitely not afraid to use a pressure washer either, I think my lil 1900 psi electric will do the job too.
