Transmission- 5 Speed automatic write up with pics for second gen 4 liter trucks

Update. I called Sonnax today with a few questions about their Zip Kit. I told the tech the problem I was having and he said the SLT - Line Pressure Control Solenoid is is a common failure point. It's not an Open/Closed solenoid but rather a Linear solenoid so if it's acting up it could trigger various codes or even contribute to the Torque Convertor Shutter I've been dealing with. He also said the RatioTek Shift Kit is really a bandaid to address pressure issues and he didn't recommend using it. He wasn't familiar with the RatioTek kit specifically but he said putting in stronger springs and increasing bore size on certain separator plate holes is a patch/bandaid to compensate for Line Pressure issues. I don't think he was telling me that to sell me the Zip Kit since I indicated I already planned to buy it. He did also recommend the Line Pressure Booster Kit. So here is what I'll be having installed next week.

SLT - Line Pressure Control Solenoid $156
Sonnax Line Pressure Booster Kit $55 (The Sonnax Tech indicated this kit will provide firmer shifts similar to those in Shift Kits)
Sonnax Zip Kit $208

As a follow-up to my post #220, I cleared the trouble code P0776 and now my truck is back to shifting thru all gears without issue. So the issue wasn't necessarily the SL2 solenoid. Somehow a code was triggered and the ECM shut down SL2 solenoid. Once cleared, it operated normally which tells me that SL2 has not failed. Something obviously triggered code P0776 and is causing my Torque convertor shutter/chatter so I'm hoping the above parts should properly address the root cause.

I wana trace this shift solonoid e circuit were can i trace this in the wiring diagram
Does the wire go straight from that female connector to the ecm ?

 

when you are diagnosing the wiring harness , the wiring starts at the ecm .
Disconnect the transmission harness from the transmission casing as well as at the ecm and check for infinite resistance on the wiring . I prefer using the beep test using a digital voltage meter
Before you remove the harness from the transmission , disconnect the harness from the ecm . From there you can pin out the resistances on the shift solenoids

I already changed the harness in the transmission

i remove all the pins in tha female connector and none were broken i had some corosion on some

I cleaned them with a welding tip and remove corosion on the pins itself i had voltage going true cant remember how much tho

I removed my pan again to check that sr solonoid and send 12 volts to it and it was making a working sound and could see the moving part work

After i did all this i took it out and filled it like it supose too with AT temp thing
I cleared the Po986 code took it for a spin it looked okay was shifting maybe for 10 min then boom check engine came back no more shifting in 5th

I got
Back to she shop now i had p0986 and p0771

When i 1 got this p0986 i got it too toyota to check it out and they told
Me i had corosion on that female
Plug and resitance was not
Good so they decided to start by changing harness on valve body so i got it in and when the tech saw a bit of metal shaving they told me my tranny was blown and was gona cost me lots $$$ i
Told them to pit it outside i was gona fix myself i didnt buy that
So here i am

Tranny has 200000
This saturday i want to recheck resitance on all the wires on that e5 plug on that ecm ... enything else i should look for ..

 

Also when i change selector from
Park to drive i get a harsh engagement

 

What year is your truck ? is it 4x4 ?
Sure is a lot of green death on those terminals .
You will get a harsh engagement if there are codes . You need to remove battery posts when working on the truck , then re-connect when finished cleaning the wiring

Ya i always removed my baterie post when i worked on it

 

When im checking from the ecm e5 plug
Say the sr solonoid which is E5 plug and pin number 9 do i need to check also the E6-1 pin also why is their 2
And do i need to put the selector gear in drive when testing this to match that 5th gear

When it says engine idling do i need to start the truck ?

Or i just unplug the baterie and check just for the 10 volts ignition off for all of them for these test i think i need to let the baterie connected right because of the volts

I dont understand the waveform thing also

Between the number were it says e1 is that electronic circuit 1

Also why here its say to test in volts and on other pages i found its says 11 too 15 ohms

If you are testing for voltage you leave the battery connected and just test 1 wire . Ground your volt meter to the engine block .
If you are testing the shift solenoid for resistance , you backprobe both wires with your ohm meter and battery disconected or key off

The ratio tech kit is just a shift improver kit that can be used on a good working transmission . It should never be used in the attempt to fix a problem . Sonnax and Gill Younger kits are needed to repair problems .

I know the transmission was available in 2003 so maybe your 4 runner is a late production model .

Yes , I always assume everyone owns a Tacoma because Tacoma World . These transmissions can also be found in the Tundra

 

So im okay then on were i did my research

 

I might go to the shop tonight and test
From the ecm to see if the wiring is okay
I did but i just want to make sure for the last time .... if everything is okay from their i will remove the pan again remove
The solonoide sl1 and test it

 

I might just stop at toyota directly and ask them for the wiring shematic for my truck

 

Or with the ones i got from
The 5 spd right up is okay ... were it talks about the po986 and p0771 i can follow that ?
