Sputtering...

my 95 tacoma i bought seems to have a sputter when i accelerate. i was told maybe moisture in my gas tank, so i put water remover and still didnt go away. im thinkin it may be the injectors


anyone have any ideas of what it may be?

 

try cleaning the throttle body and seafoaming the motor(go by directions on can, but dont add to oil...run half a can thru the brake booster line/half in the gas tank) and see if that helps out. you may need to replace spark plugs and fuel filter also, depending on the last time that was done. hope this helps.

 

I'm not a believer in "snake oil" additives, but I tell you what, my 02 was idling rough and seemed sluggish on accel. I was in Autozone, asked the old ex-mechanic there if any of the injector cleaners actually worked. They had Lucas "Upper Cylinder Lube" aka "fuel treatment" on sale, two for 6 bucks. Said what the hell. I dumped two of them in and filled the tank. Smoothed the idle right out and judging from where the gas gauge is at now I'm getting quite a bit better mileage. Worth a shot for 6 bucks...

 

that lucas is actually pretty good. i use it and techron, as i like the techron pretty good too. but i love seafoam too.

 

I seafoamed through my brake vac hose and it set the CEL! Went off by itself after a couple drives, but scared me. Someday I'll borrow a scan tool and read / reset the code. It did tune my lawnmower, chain saw, leaf blower, pressure washer and weed whacker up nicely though so I know it works.

 

damn.......im wondering how it set that cel off going thru the brake booster. there arent any sensors until you get to the cats. let me know what it says when you get it read. i havent had any cel problems when using seafoam.

 

I was thinking two possibilities, first it loosened up so much gunk something got caught up in the upstream O2 sensor, blew off later, and second maybe I let too much air in the hose while doing it and the O2 sensor saw an overly lean non-correctable condition.

I have to hit Autozone this weekend to get the paint to do my grill surround, if I remember I'll borrow their scan tool.

 

yeah, its very possible that a small piece of crud is touching one of the sensors...i wasnt thinking about that. im gonna seafoam my truck again tomorrow, when i did it when i first got my truck, i didnt get enough in there, and it worked, but not the way i know that it will.
