Subs... 8's or 10's?

I'm getting that box that fits behind the back seats in an 04 doublecab. It fits 2 8" subs, I'm not worried about my rock music, but I'm nervous that the 8's wont sound good with my rap music, so I'm considering putting bigger holes to fit a pair of 10's. I REALY dont want to put the biger holes in the box... so I'm curious how 8's sound with rap music. Somebody PLEASE i just need to know how they sound...

 

I vote 10" drivers. Frequency response for 8" drivers starts at around 50Hz and that's just what they are rated, I'm sure they start falling off sooner than that and your usable frequency response is closer to 80Hz. 10" drivers will go more like 30Hz meaning your 50Hz range is in play much more easily.

 

well another issue i have is that box isnt very big. idk if i can even put holes big enough in it. and even if i could... idk if i can still have enough volume in the box for a 10" sub.

 

You guys are ridiculous....saying that "8inch subs wont" do whatever and 10's do ______.

The only thing that the size of the cone changes is sensitivity and area swept. While it's true that larger subs typically have a lower FS (resonant frequency) it doesn't mean everything.

The best part is trying to compare ALL 8" subs against all 10" subs. Again, it's like saying that V6's are faster than V8's...that useless


Start comparing actual products and specifications and we're headed in the right direction.

Tell me...
-Interior volume of the sub enclosure (each chamber)
-Mounting depth from the front face to the rear wall.

Then we can get you straight.

 

Why do you have to be so right about car audio all the time? I think the OP should just put ports in the box, because that will just double the output and then his 8's are more like 16's. Am I right or what?

BTW, all 4 cyl's are slow.

I want to know if id be better off with shallow 10s or 8s. I just want it to be loud and still sound good... Can you find me something???

 

I have a custom box with 2 10" shallow depth Kenwood eXcellons that sound GREAT with both rock and rap. Don't hit the extreme lows very well but I can blow away the guy next to me with his stock bass turned all the way up.

 

I made custom boxes to fit the 10" pioneer shallows when i had my 01 DC. They were the recommended .45 cubic ft, just had to take out some suff behind the seats and a lot of measuring. They sounded pretty good for being 10" shallows.

you need to learn a thing or two about building a properly spec'd box. You can't just "put a port in it".
A spec'd box will always sound better than any off the shelf box. The most important thing is that your enclosure is spec'd for the exact subwoofer(s) you are using

Keep the 8's. A buddy of mine has one 8 and some nice door speakers and his music response is great.

People blabbling about how well subs play rap really don't know much. I have worked with car audio for 10 years as a hobby and if you know how to tune your box, mess around with your deck, and adjust your bass levels, an 18 can hit country.

Dont believe the Myth that different size subs are "better" for different types of music.

 

I literally was looking at a spec sheet with a list of 8" drivers and 10" drivers and what I said is absolutely true using the numbers I was looking at.

There is not much room in the 01-04 double cab rear so if you can stick some 8's...go for it.

 

Honestly...I wouldn't buy the box. The airspace is so tiny nothing will work well in it that isn't a shallow mount. Are their any other boxes that offer about 6" of depth and at least .5 cubic feet per chamber?

 

Not that I know of... I've been all over the net looking for SOMETHING, but that box is hard to beat. With that box, you still have to remove all your hardware on the back wall plus the plastic covers on the back of the seats...

 

It saddens me that you think any of that post was serious, other than Italyn being correct. I was making a facetious comment on the original discussions not having sound logic.

 

You seem to have missed the rather subtle sarcasm in my post.

 

I was talking with my installers after installing my 8" sub. They said with a custom made box I could probably fit a 12" normal mount sub behind the seat of my regular cab. Always go with a normal sub over a shallow mount, there are always options to make it fit.

 

If you are open to major structural modifications to the vehicle, sure there are always options.

A typical 12" sub will not fit behind the seat of a regular cab Tacoma without some signficant modifications. Depending on your specific needs and wants, a shallow mount is not always inferior to a more typical mounting depth.
