I leave it in 4H out in the desert and, confidentially :bikewhoops:, this truck has gone over 60mph in 4H. 4L is good to about 40mph at about 4k on the tack; it make a hell of a whining noise in 4L. Oh to the guy from Canada, half of Canada is living out here in the Arizona desert during winter so I don't know how many "snow driving experience points" they are earning:crazy:.

It’s only 4wd when your foot is on the gas...other than that its just another 4 wheel vehicle.

A clutch is the peddle thingy on the floor right beside the brake peddle thingy....works well with the shifty thing that has 6 gears.

4WD doesnt make you stop any faster and doesn't do much for side traction.

A few years ago I drove about 200 miles on I-70 when it was snow covered, in this 200 miles I passed 8 vehicles that ran off the road and they were all 4wd vehicles except for an AWD Cadillac that blew by me about 15 minutes earlier. By the time I got to where I was going my Ford Fusion was barely recognizable

Actually, wouldn’t engine compression braking slow you more in 4wd?

With identical tires a 4wd/AWD is superior to FWD/RWD in snow. This is not up for debate.

I think the AWD is way better for on road and highway use. My wife has that X3 and it is at home on snowy highway. Not deep snow, however, the 4WD is better in deep snow for sure because of ground clearance etc.

I used to race a friend home from work in the Sierra after a graveyard shift of grooming a ski slope, my RWD BMW 1600 with just snow tires in back would smoke his 4WD Toyota pickup on the unplowed highway every time. I was dumb and thought I could live forever back then. This is not up for debate. :D

Same snow tires on his truck?

I had a FWD Nissan Altima, and bought snow tires for it. Drove a couple winters then bought a AWD Subaru. I drove one winter on all seasons, the next winter I bought some wheels and put the same snow tires on the subi.

Similar weight cars, similar wheel base, same tires, only difference is AWD vs FWD. The Nissan did well in the snow, the Subaru was excellent.

    Acceleration: AWD
    Coasting: AWD
    Engine braking: AWD
    Turning under power: AWD
    Regular braking: tie
    Regular turning: tie

2WD is at best equal to AWD/4WD in some circumstances, inferior in others, and superior in none.

None of those things have any bearing on snow performance.

In that case... Toss on snow tires and forget about it. Unless you live on a mountain.

AWD and 4WD have no impact on ground clearance. The specific vehicle might but the type of drive does not.

Not the same tires at all, my car was tiny and had high speed snowtires (Yokohama VR13’s) - they were really for rally cars and were quite dedicated for snow use. Not sure what he had (probably Big O’s or Coopers). We were pretty crazy back then, town shut down after midnight except for us that worked the slopes, so there were a bunch of us that would race between town and the ski area, some even on skis holding onto a rope towed by snow mobiles.

My Subaru GL10 Turbo 4wd wagon with 4 snowtires was the ultimate, that thing was really fast on snow.
