Absolutely, if I was going to spend this much on a swap it would need to yield a significantly higher amount of HP and torque than stock.

I would entertain the idea of a swap like this if it had a high enough power to dollar ratio. The current configurations don't do it for me. It is a cool idea though.

I'd do an LS swap long before the diesel swap.

Wonder why Toyo doesn't sell a diesel truck in the US? I realize the barriers, but I think it would have some appeal on the basis of gas mileage/fuel saving costs and torque for towing.

(My previous diesel experience was an RV with a Mercedes 3-L turbo--not the fastest, but got 18 mpg despite weighing 10K lbs, had torque out the wazoo and could tow 5000 lbs.)

Easy. There is almost zero demand for diesel in the US, and it's a nightmare to get them to comply with emission standards. Also the era of the combustion engine is coming to an end - Why would Toyota waste their time trying developing a way to put a diesel in a Tacoma over a hybrid or electric?

If it came from the factory, this is why you would want it....

"the Toyota 1KD-FTV 4-cylinder engine puts out as much torque as the v6 gas engine but at almost half the RPM range. All while delivering the stellar fuel economy that these Toyota diesels are known for. In fact, Toyota rates these engines at 500,000 mile rebuild intervals for a reason. Featured on shows like Top Gear UK™, the Toyota Hilux diesel is ubiquitous with reliability and the Toyota “Go Anywhere” philosophy. At Diesel Toys, we use all factory Toyota components. This means there are no “adapters or gimmicks: used in any of our conversions. This way you get what Toyota designed from the factory and not some pieced-together “kit” that nobody wants to work on when things go wrong…"

But their conversion cost is not conducive to most peoples wallet, so it is a no-go in my opinion.

Exactly.. low range torque and better mpg. Still wouldn't be worth the cost for me personally... ever. But it sure does sound great in that video.
