Oil filter plugged clogged up w/ 10k on V6

    Yo! Changed the oil today. Filter plug was totally clogged with gunk. Any idea how to prevent this.

    Are you referring to the hole at the bottom of the oil catch cup ?

    What's it clogged with?

    Sorry for the lack of clarification. The plug in which the oil drains out of when you unscrew the filter. Plugged with gunk, debris, dirt... Any explanation. Thanks for the quick replies by the way.

    Second oil change in 10K. Probably 2000 miles of off-roading on the truck. First oil change I had done at the dealership around 4,800. Switched to synthetic.

    When changeing the oil, make sure to clean out the cup that the oil filter sits in. If you leave oil in it, it will collect all sorts of dirt and whatever in it. Just wipe it down with a clean rag, and you should be good.

    Absolutly. If its that dirty, just hold some rags under it with the plug out, but oil filter ON, and spray some break cleaner to clean it out. I know some people are going to say "WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!??????" No break cleaner by the oil filter!!!!!!!
    Trust me, it will be fine.

    Removed Secondary Air Filter,Tacomaworld Sticker,Wade In-Channel wind deflectors,Fumoto 12mm.F103N Engine Oil Drain Valve,Home Cast Bed Tie-downs
    If I remember correctly. There is a red cap over the nipple on the bottom of the cup to catch the oil below the filter.
    With a Fumoto oil plug and a 3' long hose I can change my oil without spilling a single drop. Nice and Clean oil changes.

    Filter on for sure... and the engine COLD!!

    Highly flammable brake cleaner & hot engine ...really really bad idea!

    I'm guessing not much. Since the filter is inverted, I'd probably let the truck sit for a while after running the engine to make sure that gravity has some time to do it's job before removing the filter.
