I saw a video of someone testing the mpg on the Tacoma 3rd gen, when he filled the gas tank he waited 30 sec before filling it again. Why? Is it the same as topping it off because I know that’s not good for your car.

When gas is poured or for that matter any liquid it forms bubbles which go up the fill neck. This kicks off the nozzle and stops the flow. If you wait 30s the bubbles disappear and you can probably put in another litre or two. That being said, I believe there can be issues with Toyotas and topping up trucks. Could be wrong on that.I think there was a sensor in the neck and topping it up caused it to malfunction. Might be thinking of something else though.

I just go until it clicks off once. Done. No need to jam as much as you can in there.

I have done the fill to click 3 times for years on all my vehicles, the 05 sport was bought new and traded in ‘17 with about 116k, never had any issues.

I don't know about Tacoma, but WSDOT uses this one for avalanche control up at Snoqualmie pass.

So what I'm going to say is based on if the pump the guy was at in this video has whats called a Healy Vapor Recovery system installed. As you fill your gas tank there is a liquid gas going in and gas vapor coming out because it is being displaced by the liquid. Much like aaen said there are probably bubbles that formed as the tank was being filled, I cant imagined enough to really warrant waiting for them to rise just to put that extra little bit in. But the system will cut off once it detects enough of that vapor pressure coming out because the tank is being filled so the guy in the video may be thinking that once those bubbles come out then there will be more room for liquid gas to go in, again though I cant imagine that there's enough bubbles forming that waiting for them is really worth it.

I've filled to top of neck several times, not all the time though. And I've found the pump kicks off a lot quicker if you filling at a place that has a higher volume pump VS a place with a slower fill rate (lower volume pump), thus you will get less gas if you let the pump dictate the fill if you have a place that has a fast fill high volume pump, because it will stop the pump to stop a overflow situation.

I’ve seen the same “fill to full” double click with 30 second delay practice as well. It’s presented as a standard when comparing vehicle(s) MPG average during a one-on-one comparison (i.e., Canyon vs Toyota towing challenge). The objective is to consistently fill the tank as previous to obtain a more accurate top off level, and the double click with 30 seconds inbetween seems to be a popular method.

By watching the videos, there seems to be no risk to overfilling as the hose cutoff appears to respond normally (full nozzle flow is used, NO light squeeze with a dribble flow)... the reason for a delay is to allow the fuel to settle, as stated in #7, providing a consistent top off level from fill up to fill up.

Whats the point? Is the extra 5 miles of range worth potential long term damage? I dont get you people. Even if there is a 1% chance of damage over the life, is that worth it?

I top off often, especially if I have rewards points, or if I'm traveling through the remote desert and there's no gas for a lonnnggg time.

Carry a Jerry can with you. I have extra gas at all times. To often here in Northern AB, I find people on the road out of gas. THis last few months its about 6 people.

I always topped off with every vehicle. With my '01 Taco I can actually hear the fuel rising up the fill neck. Definitely no need nor desire to go any further.

It'd go missing, some crackhead would run off with it, or the 125* sun would evaporate it all lol

The tank are sealed, they will not evaporate, just expand. Locking them up tends to bring damage to the tank carrier when idiots try to steal the fuel. I'd rather they took the sceptre gas can, I can get them here in canada a lot cheaper then you guys can in the US.
