2WD go off-road?

2wd truck are plenty capable, especially with a locker. The LSD works pretty well, and that combined with airing down, choosing smart lines, and using momentum to help me, ive followed all my 4x4 jeep, 4runner, and truck friends everywhere they go.
Only places to watch out for are conbinations of sand, slipery loose gravel, and hills.
I used to have a 4wd 4runner, and the only advantage it had was i could go over the same stuff slower, and with more room for driver error.

Arizona has plenty of stuff thats fine to drive with 2wd, at least all the areas ive seen / been to.

Have fun OP! Take it easy until you get a sense for the truck and terrains limits! (Also wheeling with a buddy helps)

Id invest in a elastic snatch strap, tire deflator, recovery points (hitch shackle) and may a set of recovery boards. Should be under $150 with deals going on right now.

Edit: then a good set of A/T tires down the road when stock wears out, or if you can swing them sooner. I have all of this^^ and rarley get stuck here in socal and even on sand dunes, except when I am forced to stop unexpectedly on a trail.

What if someone wants to off road a 4WD SR5?! That’s really hurting my mind to think about that.

4wd=off road vehicle

Non TRD off road= not designed for off road

 

Hype and perception. It’s been a topic on this forum before, but not enough. A bone stock Toyota pickup is a capable off road vehicle. A bone stock Toyota 4x4 is an amazing off road vehicle. Right off the bat. The HYPE that Toyota has sold people on as far as what’s “needed” for off road is a joke. I off-road frequently, and choose my lines reasonably. I haven’t yet torn my fuel tank open ad died in a fiery death. An aftermarket tank skid would be nice to have, but I personally don’t require it. I say aftermarket, becaue the factory one, as well as the skid plate, are nice COSMETIC touches, to get that “off road” look. They protect a little, but if a person tells me a Toyota truck without factory skid plates isn’t off road ready, I’m laughing, politely, inside. Just like the perception of 2wd being incapable of leaving the pavement. I had my 01 out not too long ago, and some guys at a gas station were standing near it and talking about it when they came in and stood in line, and I heard “yeah but it’s not 4wd...” but the thing is, 9 times outta 10, that 2wd will go farther, faster. And it’s a 4 banger. “What? Gasp! A 4 cyl? How can a 4cyl EVER off road?” Well it’s simple. It, just like the 6, or hell even an 8, has the power to get up to off road speeds. The difference is that the 4 has a smaller margin of un used power. So what. It’s un used. Becaue no one is going WOT on a trail (generally). So yeah, a v8 would smoke me off road. If we were driving 120 mph uphill. Off road. So the 4 has always been more than capable. Toyota trucks started off as 4s, and it didn’t matter if it was 2wd or 4wd, though 4wd is certainly an advantage, point is, they were designed to be what they are, utility vehicles both on and off road.


I do love my 4x4 more though.

Just go out and start with some easy runs like Sheeps Bridge or Four Peaks. As long as it's not wet or super sandy you'd be surprised how far 2wd will get you on many of the FS roads etc. I just spent the night up on the Rim cruising around different roads. Never needed 4x4 once.

 

Your crosstrek is AWD. Learn the difference you rookie.

 

That’s basically the plan. Take it slow with the difficulty of trails and progress until I’m at a point where I’ve reached the limits of my truck. Then adjust from there. Or trade it in if I feel it’s not gonna stack up with what my plans are. Thanks dude!!!

 

Just remember if you are facing something you know you can't make. Start stacking rocks.
